Atmos is nice for solo piano but less essential.

Agreed--though it will be nice to have this on BDA in a hi-res format

The Karajan one is potentially more interesting

What do we know about the sources for these Atmos mixes? Is it likely they'll turn out any better than the Karajan Beethoven set?

The Atmos stuff that DG have been releasing on Tidal is really tame, for the most part: faint hall ambiance for both rears and overheads.

Look like releases from the 60s. So pre-quad, maybe 3 track tape. Likely even less going on in the surrounds.

Thanks for this tip! Just ordered the Jarvi Bernstein Mass and Steve Reich's Desert Music--two titles I've been meaning to acquire for a long time. (Just wish I hadn't paid full price for those Kurt Weill symphonies a month ago!)

I went a little hog wild and ordered 12 discs from Berkshire Records cross referencing each purchase with HRAudio.net for reviews, etc.

Now to find the time to listen ..... intently!

Both are being released as 5CD+Atmos sets. The Karajan one is potentially more interesting - Atmos is nice for solo piano but less essential.

Came across this 'curious' disclaimer on the Argerich Chopin set [5 CDs/1 BD~A]. The BD~A contains the entirety of CDs 1~4 but excludes on the BD~A the recordings with cellist Mischa Maisky 'for reasons of audio quality.' Hmmmm!

It looks like these are from the "Live in Japan" disc they made in 2000, I'm guessing it's lower-res digital.

So good enough for RBCD but not for BD~A? I'm sure the DGG engineers employed at a minimum 96/24 DDD technology unless 'someone screwed up?'
For a live recording from then? I'd be surprised if it was more than 24/48. I don't think 96 became standard until a fair bit later and wouldn't be shocked if it was live using the venue's system.

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned here, but I came across this release of Beethoven‘s Symphony No.6 from Pure Audio Recordings. It’s a bit expensive for one symphony, so I am wondering if it’ll have a discrete surround mix to go along with the video. Wishful thinking, perhaps. 🤔

I saw that. I was just wondering if it was going to be immersive à la TACET or an ambience only surround mix. Pure Audio has done some aggressive surround mixes, so this one made stop and wonder. But I probably won’t be taking the plunge at that price.
:LOL::LOL: Once again, I mistook your meaning for "discrete surround mix" for mine.

It‘s fun to imagine Beethoven’s Pastoral symphony being given a fully immersive Atmos surround mix to go along with that Nature video. A Beethovenian “rumbling summer thunderstorm“ coming from the ceiling speakers and all around would be quite thrilling. ⚡😅💦
