Just as the matrice threads for SQ and QS I thought I'd post a few interesting reports , I found while perusing Billboard Magazine , years 1972 through to 1976.
The WEA record group backs CD-4 and sets guidlines . The first discs in quad should appear
for a May 73 release .
(March 03rd 1973 ; 10)
Ted Templeman states there are already quad mixes on tbe latest albums from :
Van Morrison , The Doobie Brothers , Arlo Guthrie , Ry Cooder , and Randy Newman , scheduled for an
August /September 73 release date .
(August 04th 1973 ; 49)
The first quad CD-4 records from Warner Electra Atlantic appear in the U.S.
(August 25th 1973 ; 13)
Bowie originally pro quad and then, turned against it.
Doug
The other way around I'd think.
Any 70's quad mixes were witheld , Not into quad until Serious Moonlight.
I'm not sure he was really pro quad in the 70's .
FWIW He was there with Visconti when Eddie Kramer mixed "DAVID LIVE" in 4 channel at Electric Lady NY .
A Billboard indication for a few weeks stated "Young Americans" was expected via the top 100 hits listings .
And one more "Stage" live recording was set up in quad for Tony Visconti with RCA bigwigs in attendance.
So something spooked him off quad recording releases in favour of Stereo only. And I'm pretty certain his contract gave him the rights to forgo any quad release , him being one of the few big money RCA ICONS .
Both Neil Young , and Van Morrison , probably had the same final decision. ( plus Ry Cooder)
