As a composer of instrumental music, Louis Spohr was second only to Beethoven in the category of widespread attention and recognition during the first half of the nineteenth century. After Beethoven’s death in 1827 he was regarded by large segments of the music public as the greatest living composer. In 1828 the leading music critic Friedrich Rochlitz asked very rhetorically, ‘Who else should now write symphonies?’’ Spohr was supposed to continue what Beethoven had begun. However, even then Spohr’s symphonic music was recognized as the absolute opposite of the type of the Beethovenian symphony. If genial musical license holds sway in Beethoven’s oeuvre, then in Spohr classical order prevails. But no matter – he was a leading figure in the concert world of his times and for this reason merited a fresh evaluation. Howard Griffiths recorded Spohr’s complete symphonic oeuvre for CPO with the NDR Radio Philharmonic on the basis of a new critical edition of the scores. Since Spohr had withdrawn his Symphony no.10, here it could finally and wonderfully experience its world premiere! Following the release of Vol.4 of our universally acclaimed complete edition of his symphonies, klassik-heute.com wrote, ‘‘One of the CPO label’s most significant projects!’

So I received this parcel from a fellow in Bloomington Illinois , very promptly and discovered a few very minor amusements.

1)if you look at the 4&5 and the 6 DVDs they are in regular jewel cases , not the super jewels of the other four. They are the same series and are DVDs not CDs, the only difference being the case. Maybe supply chain issues.

2) I discovered I had already bought the 7&8 disc which was in the collection (from the local Half Price Bookstore).

3) but this was wunnerful wunnerful because that disc in the newly received set had the slightest beginning and suggestion of DVD disc rot. I am sure it will remain playable for a long time but it is nice to have a perfect one.

Conductor Martin Gester has followed up his BIS recording of Handel’s 12 Concerti Grossi Op. 6 with an equally splendid performance of Handel‘s Concerti Grossi Op. 3. This time he teams up with Van Dieman's Band, a Baroque ensemble from Tasmania, Australia.

Presto Music is having a sale on early music this month.

Warmly recommended, especially for anyone who enjoyed Martin Gester conducting Arte dei Suonatori on the earlier BIS SACD.

Here’s an interesting selection of works by Beethoven that are superbly performed by Cappella Aquileia under the direction of Marcus Bosch. Beethoven’s Egmont has a bit of narration in German, but it also has plenty of wonderful music for orchestra and soprano. Its powerful overture was taken up as the unofficial anthem of the Hungarian revolution in 1956. This work and the various overtures on this disc offer a good opportunity to explore Beethoven‘s music beyond his symphonies. The Multichannel recording is excellent, especially in Wellington’s Victory which uses the rear channels discretely for offstage effects.

It is also on sale this month at Presto Music.

I cannot praise highly enough classical label Capriccio's extraordinary, exquisitely recorded multi~CH SACD set of Russian composer Alfred Schnittke's FILM MUSIC consisting of four volumes

Alfred Schnittke was a Russian composer famous for his unique approach of composing music known as ‘polystylism’. He was a genius at producing scores using his newly developed polystylistic technique. He fell in love with music during his early years living in Vienna, where music is a part of history and culture.

I saw PDQ Bach at Carnegie Hall in one of the last of his big shows and for the biography of Peter Schickele in the program they inserted a biography of Alfred Schnittke. I had a good laugh.

I'm a sucker for immersively recorded chamber music played by hip young ensembles. And I want to support IAA. So:

How does it compare to the Apple streaming atmos version? My bias would lean toward indistinguishable but on the other hand few apple atmos recordings draw me in like my favorite (lossless) 5.1's do. 🤷‍♂️

Another new chamber recording. The Ligeti Bagatelles are always fun. (ruvido enough?)
