Usually I spend my morning breakfast time watching the stock market news on CNBC (the CNBC pundits crew are more traders than investors -so be careful out there ;).) Anywho, since it's a Holiday, "Juneteenth" I thought I'd try some calming classical music off our Apple TV 4K in the Spatial Audio section and just do a basic shuffle there in the Classical section. Of course as I'd have thought there isn't much rear speaker action in most of this classical music. But one did stand out from the others with some nice rear action. It was from an artist named "Jean-Michel Blais"

on this album, the song "flâneur" (not sure about the rest of the album yet, as I'm still running my Shuffle.)

It takes a QQ village! - knowing you cats though, it's probably already been mentioned 😄

If you haven’t already, give these titles a listen:
https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-3d-orchestral-collection/1589474282https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-3d-film-music-collection/1590829459
More rear channel discrete action than your typical classical albums.

On a separate note, my investment portfolio balances are dropping faster than the panties at an after prom party.

Did you try the IDs I posted last Friday

Turns out I never added the ID but my previous post here has the two EPs with multiple tracks. Tidal has them under ‘albums’

Edit: Last Friday my time, Thursday if you are in the US.

Thanks yes, I think the thing that got me was I was searching for the individual tracks by name not realizing they appeared on these albums (Look Sharp and Joyride). Once I looked for those I saw them as available in Atmos.

Iggy Pop sings on two tracks, jazz organ from the late Dr Lonnie Smith

Trombone Shorty

New Orleans has always been a fulcrum for American music, where cultural collisions gave birth to jazz and where some of the best blues, gospel, and soul to emerge from the U.S. were fostered. Troy Andrews, a.k.a. Trombone Shorty—who sings and composes in addition to blowing his namesake instrument—embodies the Crescent City’s musical melting pot for the modern age. On his first album in five years, the first one made in his own Buckjump Studio, he invokes those older styles through a gritty amalgam of rock, soul, and funk. Bluesman Gary Clark Jr. adds an incendiary solo to the storming “I’m Standing Here,” while singer Lauren Daigle duets with Shorty on the horn-stoked “What it Takes.” Classic Big Easy brass band sounds are updated with banging funk and the hooky chorus of “Everybody in the World,” while the title track evokes the crunch of vintage Lenny Kravitz—one of Shorty’s earliest advocates.

New from harmonia mundi:
https://music.apple.com/us/album/ravel-concertos-pour-piano-mélodies/1617104053Employs what seems to be the new "default" mode of Atmos-for-classical mixing: full, immersive use of all speakers in the 2-D plane, with front overheads doubling and "lifting" front L & R and hall reverb in the rear overheads. I was previously unfamiliar with Ravel's Concerto in G, which channels Stravinsky and Gershwin.

I also don't think it has been a channel error transcription. I think it was intended. The mixer had to listen to it and, at least, see some graphics as I see on my DIY 13 Channels VUMeter: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/th...2ch-flagship-avr-thread.2952552/post-60361895

When a mixer just upmix a stereo recording by just adding echo/reverb in the rears, we get the kind of mix that we denigrate and we found in some live concerts and some not creative mixes.

BUT if they just moves the stereo to the (side) surrounds and add echo/reverb to the fronts and heights, we really can get a binaural effect that really sounds more immersive.

I think it is intentional, and I also would think it is done for the headset binaural listening, assuming that it should be the main target market.
I agree that it's intentional as there are some very conscientious decisions made on some tracks versus others. I put my AVR in pure direct mode and checked out a bunch of songs on my 5.2.4 system. California Girls had lead vocals with some echo in the front and lead vocals with background vocals/instruments in the surround so it does sound rear heavy compared to a typical mix. Several songs had lead vocals in the fronts and the surrounds with varying degrees of echo on the fronts (Surfin' Safari, Surfin' USA, Fun*3, Don't Worry Baby). Surfer Girl had lead vocals everywhere, including the rear ceiling (couldn't get close enough to the front ceiling to be sure). Good Vibrations has the theremin mixed louder than I have ever heard it before.

Definitely not a traditional mix, but after watching the most recent Brian Wilson Documentary, I can imagine that if he had any say he could have made some non-traditional suggestions or else previewed the binaural mix on headphones.
