Do you need a separate phono pre amp with a decoder?

I thought I topped out at 17 KHz until I tried another set of speakers. I could hear out to 22 KHz with those.

My response has dwindled a bit with age since then.

Yes, you want to be sure the source can actually reproduce the frequencies in question (I used to work, in part, in the hearing aid industry).
