Howard Jones presents ENGAGE

The work was conceived as a highly interactive live experience designed to immerse audiences in an audio/visual feast. It embraces EDM, contemporary classical, cinematic and pop music influences, and fuses it with ballet, modern dance, and philosophy.

Captured on DVD and CD and presented with ground-breaking interactive packaging, ENGAGE represents Howard’s most ambitious work to date.

I conceived ENGAGE as a live visceral experience. I imagined myself at the venue and imagined what it would be like to be at a gig and how exciting you could make the music and the visuals and make it a fully immersive experience. I didn’t want to think of just another studio album or another live concert DVD, I wanted to liberate myself from conventional song structures. I wanted cinematic textures, big sub-bass moments, and dramatic coordinated visuals. I wanted to include all my influences – classical ,electronic, pop music, cinema, contemporary dance, ballet and philosophy which has always been the inspiration for my work.
One of the most enjoyable things about being a human being is our interaction with each other and our face-to-face communication and dialogue with each other.
Fluorescent gloves, makeup, customized clothing and the use of apps is the interactive element of the experience that is so much of what ENGAGE is all about and so we have continued this idea with the packaging. Ian Walden of Hush Creative who worked me on the unique Ordinary Heroes package has come up with a startling design concept in the form of a large format book. Each piece has either something to interact with or to physically construct with online support. ENGAGE comes as a DVD mixed in 5.1 and stereo and an audio CD. With the book comes another DVD with live performances of 12 acoustic and electric tracks.

The pieces deal with living in the moment, defeating cynicism, respect for all people, universal brotherhood/sisterhood with quotes from Daisaku Ikeda,Thoreau, Einstein, Kierkegaard, Tolstoy. I worked with Stephen Tayler on the video elements and Robbie Bronnimann on the audio.
I would like to take ENGAGE live on the road so please know through this project that you are supporting me with my new work. Everyone who buys a copy of the book will get a thank you credit on all formats and the regular version will also be signed.

I hope I’ve given you an idea of what it’s all about but I guess it really needs to be experienced.
I’ll give you regular updates as the project heads towards completion.
Thanks for your support
Howard

Robbie Bronnimann/dba Robbie Bronnimann¹s passion for music & its
associated technologies has had a profound affect on the dance music that he
has poured his energies into for a number of years. Having released numerous

moniker for the likes of Chicane, Ferry Corsten & Love Inc. He has also

Howard songs which have proved the perfect material for this medium. The
last couple of years have seen him producing albums outside the dance genre
for trash pop duo Industrial Salt and singer songwriter Henry Olonga.

Stephen W Tayler has a long-standing relationship with Howard, having
recorded and mixed ŒHuman¹s Lib¹, ŒDream Into Action¹ and many other
projects. He recently mixed and authored Howard¹s 20th Anniversary Concert

Hey guys! I just saw this mentioned in another thread and tried to find some listening samples on the Internet, but it's slim pickings. The very short bits I was able to find sound pretty cool.

I'm wondering how many of you out there have this, and what your impressions are.

From the product description its "Engage" moniker would indicate it needs to be in a Video format to do the content justice.. but I can't say whether the 5.1 is truly audio-only or has video elements to it.. Mike??

I got this the other week but haven't got round to playing it yet.

Sounds good to me. Not the greatest surround but not the worst either. The whole thing has video as well. When it started it showed him on stage and I thought it would be live but the recording is not.

Hi Pete, I listened to the album again. The songs are good to listen to once in a while, not spectacular, but that is a matter of taste. The visuals are excellent.

The surround mix is not the most engaging ;). There are worse mixes but also a lot more that are better. To me it is more a big stereo mix, with some nice elements in it. But with electronic music like this album, more can be done.

All in all this album is a 6,5/7 for me.

Edit: as a concept the album works better, with the visuals. But as I mostly listen to music without a screen, this is a bit lost in my situation.

Any other people take a chance on this one, thoughts?

peter

Yes. I got this one a few weeks ago too. The music is okay, the mix does not really sound truly discrete. To me it sounds almost like it had been run through a processor of sorts. Though, Fidelity wise, it sounds good. The cool part is that it does come with Howard signature on it if you went through pledge music. That was neat. I hope that he continues his ventures into 5.1, and ultimately chooses to do his entire catalog.

I wonder if artists could consider a pledge to 5.1 option? If the demand proved to cover cost, why not? For example, I like the new Toto, would love to pledge to get it to 5.1.
