If you log-in to your router you will see your connection speed, which is the maximum that can be achieved.
I don't know where to see that, but within my router (by logging in) they have a speed test button. When I click it, I get the 80+ Mbps. Maybe that's what you mean?

Most routers have a 'web page' built in which you can access via its IP address and it will show you connection speeds, network up time, your ip address with your provider etc. Some routers require you to login as an administrator to see this others don't. Its the page where you set things up on the router.

How 'bout what type of service do you have; is it DSL or Cable or other? I remember reading that some cable systems have a type of shared pipeline service, and the more users online at once reduces the speed (just basically thinking out loud here.) Perhaps there could be some web pages that go though certain "regional internet hubs/concentrators" as DuncanS said; that are having problems.
Also, what operating system are you using and have installed an update recently i.e. Win. 10? Maybe you could roll back that last update a see if it helps. I've read that there have been some major problems with Microsoft's last update on Win. 10.

I have Mediacom High Speed. I'm signed up for 80Mbps downloads, and mostly that's what I get. To add to the confusion, I've been checking different things....summary below:

  • Gene laptop 9 mbps wired via router
  • Gene laptop 9 mbps wifi via router
  • Gene laptop 80 mbps wired direct to modem (bypass router)
  • Wife laptop 80 mbps wifi via router
  • Roku 9 mbps wifi via router
  • iphone 80 mbps wifi via router

We are all on the same network, just different devices. This summary makes absolutely no sense to me at all. The fact that the Roku is struggling with speed as well as my laptop....I dunno what it all means.

Yes, I have Windows 10, yes I have the latest firmware...but then, so does my wife.
I unplugged everything, rebooted, wired everything back up. Reset Roku..............

Same problems.

Looks to me like the common thread here may still be the router (which by name routes traffic); it might be necessary to do the "unconscionable" and contact your service provider for service to verify the router is functioning properly.

Unfortunately, the router is not theirs. The modem is theirs and their responsibility.

😱 Drat those sneaky service providers!
I know you're a smart cookie Gene; if it was an easy fix, you'd have figured it out already. Computer networking is just so complex these days it bogles my mind. I remember when the internet was young I used to code my own web pages via HTML; but now it's like looking inside the engine of a modern car. Unless someone here on the forum that has technical experience with routers steps up to help, the next thing I might consider (after sleeping on it another night or two) is to call in an independent computer network specialist to check your system out.
Heck you might even have caught a bug of some sort, so make sure to virus check everything also (I know the ROKU is an IOT device but still who knows, it's still hooked into your overall network.)

Did you try rebooting your main router; that usually works for me. On mine there’s a teeny tiny button on the back you hold for about 5 seconds ( but no longer)
Me too - LOL 😝 sometimes I like to blame the service provider for maintenance periods or maybe they’re throttling your data for some reason 🤷‍♂️
Wow. I never do that. I think I can do it from my laptop too.

I'm a hardware person not an IT bod so to me something somehow seems to be throttling back your laptop and the Roku (streaming stick?) when connected to the router with either wi-fi or ethernet. If it was just wi-fi, it could be its using the lower speed 2.4GHz link not the 5GHz frequency band, but you're seeing it with Ethernet, so unlikely its that. The fact that your laptop connected directly to the modem gives 80Mb/s does tend to point to it being the router, but your Wife gets a good connection as does the iPhone. High error rates on links will lower the speed, as you get lots of data resends, but you're seeing it only with your laptop or the Roku. So unlikely. Its as if the router thinks your laptop and the Roku are slow devices, so won't try to connect any faster.

If I can get hold of a friend tomorrow who runs an IT company I'll see if he has any suggestions.

Reposting, but added another bullet point for my work laptop speeds I just checked this morning.

I talked to my friend and he was puzzled as well! He said that its quite likely its your service provider who is throttling back your speed when you're connected to your router, and wondered if you'd done a lot of large downloads recently?

No I haven’t. Just transferred files from NAS to my external drive. But if they are throttling, wouldn’t all devices on network be impacted?

Apparently not, it seems they can throttle back a device by either it's IP address (normally assigned by the router) or its MAC address (which is fixed and unique to your laptop, no 2 MAC addresses should be the same), but you get a higher speed when connecting directly to the modem which is very strange. Have you talked to your internet provider about it?

What brand/model of router do you have? Some routers have an option to limit the download speed on specific devices in their management interface. It is possible someone changed this for your device or it was accidentally changed.

Do you still have your outside wi-fi turned on? I was wondering if things were trying to connect to that - its just a slight possibility. If so, turn it off and try speed testing again.

No, I turned it off a week ago when I started having speed issues.

Looking back through the thread, it looks like you have an EAP-110 Access Point. I checked out the manual for this device and it has an option to limit bandwidth for connected devices. Here's a snapshot of the Omada app manual page that explains this:

Open up the app and check if your device has any download/upload limit settings.
