This idea has been brought up in other threads. On the surface it seems like a great idea. One decoder that does everything. The Universal decoder decodes SQ, EV-4 and QS. If CD-4 had encoded channels as well as discrete then one decoder could do it all!

Actually UD-4 used that idea starting with an encoded basic matrix (BMX) then adding discrete information via subcarriers. As UD-4 was a latecomer that never really got off the ground it's hard to say if it was a good idea or not.
