I listen to everything (on my basement system) using DPL2 music [except DPL2 movie for VHS sources], I don't notice the "shut-in" effect.

Excellent article, I agree with Lynn 100% in his criticism of Dolby PL II. We haven't heard from Lynn Olson or Malcolm Lear here in awhile. That article is from 2019!

The gain riding thread - Users Who Are Viewing...(check out the names )

I listen mostly to stereo content (CDs, YouTube videos) w/DPL 2 (I haven't heard the variable matrix logic operating), my old receiver decodes DD and DTS (core) which is provided by my DVDs and Blu-rays, the only other logic directed matrix decoding I've heard is the Buddy Rich SQ DVD, Tate SQ decoded to DD and DTS 4.0, I'll listen again soon and see if I hear the Tate logic system operating.
