I'm somewhat wondering if this auction is from a certain QQ'er that was a huge Sansui fan, but of whom "we no longer speak thy name"?

QSD-1 for sale by a fan

I can't quite tell by the wording, but the seller makes reference to QQ, are selling almost exclusively Sansui products, and have Sansui promotional stuff in their images. But, they also don't mention the "holy grail" blend resistor modification, and instead mention an outside technician.

Anyone's guess? It just caught my eye - I'm not looking to buy.

Wow indeed. Sure makes you wonder. So many clues. It's hard to imagine He Who Shall Not Be Named can rack up over 1800 sales with 99% satisfaction. And I thought he was last seen living in Japan?

I've had pretty much zero interaction with Quad Bob so no axe to grind with me. Like another couple of folks long gone from here, he's just a legend, like Nessie. I see the seller has some other Sansui gear that I hope doesn't belong to anyone else.

Now I will say that the item ships fron Denton, Texas. If you simply google Bob Herndon Denton TX you find a match. What are the odds?

Nope - definitely not QB. "Sansui Fan" is a former member who used to post a lot about his love for Sansui Quad - I always liked to read his posts, and was sorry when he dropped out. I won't reveal his ID since he seems to want to remain anon.

I am thinking it is someone I loved reading from, William A. Reid. He is still a member but not seen since January. Hope he comes back. I liked hearing about his wall of Sansui Sound.
Well, could be. I had forgotten the name but not his avatar! Maybe drop him a PM so he will get pinged by e mail also. I have done the same for Hobie1dog a few months ago, who is not in good health, but never heard back.

Why would he not want to post? Did I piss him off or something? (You never know) :(

These sellers are really banking on somebody that has an unnatural affection for Sansui to pay this for a 70's piece of equipment
Yes sir, that's true. I admire & respect the technology Sansui brought to us but I am not really a collector per se of anything. My basement closet has lots of cool oldie quad stuff in it but it's what I bought when each piece represented (hopefully) another big step forward.

Still I get the appeal. If you simply must have a '65 Corvette Stingray you will get one. And no one will be buying it for good gas mileage & safety features.;)

I do understand some of the appeal...and when I buy a 63 Corvette Split Window Coupe for $150k...I hope you guys will respect me in the morning ๐Ÿคญ

And it won't be a matching numbers car...but a resto-mod with all updated/new equipment...that just looks original

Indeed I would. Maybe when ya get back from the ISS... My dad's boss had an early Stingray. And really it looked so sci-fi to I thought it landed from another planet. Fell in love.

So after you get that, I'll try for the "newer" version, a full window Buick:

In a race, I'm pretty sure the Chevy would win. But with a car named after a casino, I bet I could get more girls in the rear.

Yeah, this isn't ...well, you know who. I just had an exchange with him a couple of weeks ago after I posted about an unrelated issue and he is not in Texas. And we are good now. And he sent me a pic of his system. As far as the ad itself, that is three times what I would pay for a QSD-1. And I'm an old retired guy now with more money than brains! As for it being the 'ultimate decoder', those of us with way more SQ than QS source may disagree...

I wonder who the tech was that is said to have serviced the QSD-1?
I am in Texas (not far from Denton) and had trouble finding a repair shop for my QS-D1000 when the transformer died. I finally found a tech in Ft. Worth. He was unable to find a replacement 100v transformer, so he changed the operating voltage to US 110v. He put the new transformer in a separate enclosure because the QS-D1000 cab was too small to house it. It is working great now and I don't have to use a stepdown adapter for the power cord.

Not sure why that jon urban doesn't go to QQ anymore though, or why the seller doesn't either.

MYSTERIES ABOUND

Well, I stirred up a hornets nest on this post...

Maybe the seller stopped coming to QQ around the time the torch got passed, and thought Jon was outright gone from the scene. I was kind of surprised to see a direct mention of Jon in the seller's post, it seemed excessive.

You know, jsrstereo and Circular Vibes, you two seem to be right on the money! It took me a while to find W.A. Reid in the forum history, but finally did it. I remember him, but he was not easy to locate in the threads. It looks like his last post was in the "passing on QQ" thread that Jon started back in January 2020, and he had been away for a few years prior to that. I forgot he was a Sansui man, and the auction location matches his profile.

In his threads from 2016 onward he mentions having found a trustworthy tech near him, but didn't divulge who. He seemed to be keeping that close to his chest at the time. Maybe sending a PM to him, Wagonmaster_19, might get you an answer, like Sonik Wiz suggests.

A Sansui fan myself now (have a QRX-8001); as it took most of my life to even get on board the Quad train. The main point for me here, is that it makes me sad to hear that members that are so knowledgeable with this stuff drop off the forum; mainly because most are super nice folks also and share their knowledge. But also that for a global forum, there really are only a couple hundred of us that bother to post up stuff ๐Ÿ˜ž
