Without Amazon’s clout (and $$) it’s possible that some of these Warner and UMG tracks would never otherwise see a multichannel (including Dolby Atmos) release. Especially for one or two hit wonder artists. For example, without Tidal do you think that we’d get a Blu-ray Audio disc with Kenny Rogers - The Gambler? This is the positive way to look at this announcement.

I am not a fan of streaming. I prefer physical discs followed by music downloads. Obviously the business model for Amazon Music and Tidal are the complete opposite. If Amazon is smart, it will partner with AVR manufacturers to support HD streaming though non-Amazon devices. This would allow them to maximize their subscription base. All Amazon streaming devices are essentially loss-leaders.

Exactly. I get what everyone is saying but tilting at windmills isn't going to help us in any way. Instead we should fight for improvements, like making sure we can stream to the equipment we need in order to listen properly. That could actually work. Of course I prefer physical media, but first and foremost I want more surround releases, and sounds like that's happening, which is good news.

Apple tried the exclusive format thing with ALAC (Apple Lossless). They disabled iTunes from FLAC playback and everything. They neglected to follow through with the iTunes store for some reason. (With exclusive ALAC only lossless content.) Maybe they saw the writing on the wall right away? But they never fixed iTunes. They must have still been planning something around that the whole time.

How many people use ALAC exclusively and only purchase ALAC downloads?
vs
How many people think iTunes is a 15 year obsolete washed up media player they'd never recommend to anyone (even as exclusive Apple hardware users)?

Then there's Sony and Betamax.
"Surely the format's superiority will let us get away with restricting access!" one of them said at some point.

Trying this again but this time around making it exclusive to the crudest cheapo lo-fi devices (Echo, soundbars, consumer AVRs, etc) when it's supposed to be an end all be all surround sound format?

'k

I hear what you're saying, LC, although if the mixes never make it any further than Amazon and/or Tidal, then it won't matter much (to me) whether or not Amazon exercised its clout to have the mix done in the first place.

I too keep hoping that Amazon (and Tidal) might come to their senses and let us stream directly to/via our AVRs without some intermediary device. I was gonna say that that won't happen--and that their Fire streaming devices are loss leaders--precisely because the data they collect is so valuable to them. But surely they'd keep collecting our data anyway, even without a device.

The thing with Atmos devolving into the crudest cheapness right out of the gate - marketing to devices like Echo and soundbars. And this initial copy protection gone wild looking approach (playback codecs only hidden in flash chips in standalone hardware devices). The format is destined to die before anything cool happens. At present it looks like we'll just have to wait for independent takeover.

That whole bit is frustrating! Amazon jumping on board with that? Go right the hell ahead and then you can just keep it!

So that triggers me for sure! But then this other recent behavior. Ebay is notorious for hosting the Chinese bootleg fare and buyer beware with many auctions/sales. Somehow Amazon has eclipsed Ebay for this. They are riddled with facsimile products. Bootleg chargers that will blow up the logic board in your $4000 laptop are just the tip of the iceberg. Then they moved into price fixing when the pandemic hit. I don't even have swear words for stuff like that.

In case anyone's noticed: Amazon is also going full throttle into the movie business as well with their original PRIME movies. How long before they take over Universal? And in Japan, Warner and Universal are also 'furiously' releasing back catalogue titles in MQA encoded RBCDs, charging $27 for each MQA~UHQCD disc [+DHL s/h].

With Amazon poised to be the first Trillion dollar enterprise with stock shares approaching $4K PER SHARE, is a DOLBY ATMOS [for music] monopoly in the cards? Forcing customers to buy into their ridiculous ECHO STUDIO to relish the newest format is no way to introduce its superiority over existing surround formats unless, of course, they simultaneously plan to release on BD~A with backwards compatible 5.1 codecs.....which IMO, is the only way to possibly seal its future acceptance.

 I have visions of an equivalent to Taco Bell in the film Demolition Man!

Unfortunately, Audiowannabee, MOST especially in the age of Covid 19, Amazon is almost indispensable as a ONE STOP SHOP enterprise and MONOPOLY. Things that are just not available at local Ma and Pa Stores is readily available at Amazon with lickety split one or two day shipping.

I don't use Amazon Whole Foods delivery service, thankfully, preferring to frequent my local supermarkets but for just about everything else ............

And one has to admit, Amazon Prime for movies which is included in their yearly AMAZON PRIME 'surcharge' has just about every freakin' movie available on the face of the earth......with most of them included free in the 'package!...or available at a MINIMUM fee.

And lest we forget, Amazon's third party vendors are also benefitting and they do number in the THOUSANDS!

I fear with this Covid 19 pandemic, THE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE has already been done. I always supported small business and local restaurants, but in the last 8 months, many have closed their doors for GOOD. My local French restaurant which only had 13 tables to begin with recently shuttered its doors. And for those 'necessary' items the only stores that remain are THE CHAIN STORES like CVS, Target and Walmart.

As the stock market soars in the U S and that DISCONNECT between Wall Street and Main Street WIDENS, high Tech like Apple, Microsoft, et alia, only get exceedingly richer and never has SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST been more apparent.

A sad state of affairs, INDEED. When the dust settles I can only fear for the WORST.....and I've never been as pessimistic as I am NOW!

With AMAZONS all over the world and people homebound from the pandemic, convenience has seemingly taken precedence over BASIC MORALITY..for fear of their own MORTALITY!

VERY, VERY sorry to hear that, Audiowannabee.......

Watching the REAL news closely, everyday, and stories like yours and members of families sadly absent from their dinner tables are ALL TOO COMMON.

Echoes of 1918~20 when my mother's mother, pregnant with her fourth child, died from the dreaded Spanish Flu towards the end of 1919...at age 29!

WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN FROM THE PAST ..... AS ONCE AGAIN, THE PAST IS PROLOGUE!

Oh yeah? Then I'm adding Warner and Universal to my boycott list.
Remember that Warner is also Rhino. Quadio boxes. As for Universal, I've been pissed with them ever since they were careless enough with all those master tapes that were destroyed in that 2008 fire. That, to me, is even more inexcusable.

If the creation of a small number of mega corporations wasn’t the actual goal of free market capitalism then it was surely its logical and inevitable outcome. Why the surprise that we are where we are?

I always try to find stuff locally before enriching Jeff and Co. But sometimes that means buying from the local Walmart. Now I know you don’t like Walmart, but my store employs a ton of people and there are always associates readily available and willing to help...And they know where everything is located in the store...And they will even escort me from one end of the super store to the other to make sure I don’t end up at the lost child counter. :)

I also buy a bunch of stuff from the local hobby shop, but anything that is not in stock can take up to a month to get. So anything I need right away comes from eBay...and most of those sellers are small operations...and the governor is happy because he gets his sales tax revenue regardless of where the vendor is located.

Fortunately, most small businesses in my area seem to be surviving.
