I'm not too familiar with the more modern surround systems. One that confuses me quite a bit is Atmos. I took a look at Wikipedia's Atmos info, but I still don't understand something.

Is Atmos a "surround" system? I mean, don't you need more than one speaker? I see things like this being sold and it's pretty much one speaker with a subwoofer. The description is that it has built in Dolby Atmos. But one speaker?

I'm dizzy. o_O

Thanks for your help

To appreciate a full Dobly Atmos release You need a minimum of a 5.1.4 speaker set up.
Ideally the speaker set up to have is 7.1.4

There are Atmos speaker bars....marketing junk.

And then you need an Atmos capable receiver.

It can get a bit pricy to set up but you never look back once you have it all.

And then there is the room to have for separate speaker configuration.

Of course I'm totally biased....as this Dolby Atmos is everything and more, than I've ever wanted from surround sound.

There are threads on this subject.

I will try and provide the links

The way those soundbars and single speaker “Atmos” setups are supposed to work is that they have multiple little drivers that point in different directions and bounce sound off the walls and ceiling. They come nowhere near the effectiveness of a good array of multiple speakers, as @beerking said above.

It's possible to use a 5.1.2 setup too. Isn't that what @fredblue uses?

oh yes but i would have Atmos in 7.1.4 if i could accommodate it!
unfortunately my living area is way too small, it feels like i'm pushing the limits of the space for 5.1.2 as it is! :SB

now, where's that ear trumpet! 👀 i mean, shoehorn! see if i can just squeeeeeeze a few more speakers in here...

Although it's last years model, I keep lusting after that $2000 Denon 9.1.2. Tis' not to be, alas. I will have to get by on my 5.1.2 Onkyo.
As for Fred's dilemma about creating space, I get it. I keep telling my wife I could just shove the furniture to the middle of the room! But she ain't having it, I can't even put my chair further out away from the wall per the Boss. At least I get to center my chair on the middle of wall, which is a fair compromise I guess!....at least until I need another disc rack.....oh bother.
Fred I ain't got no Bailey's but I got a new bottle of George Dickel Sour Mash I use to mix with lemon and honey for my remedy cough medicine whilst entertaining the flu bugs. As it becomes less effective you just top it off with more sour mash.

I haven’t heard the latest “atmos” devices like Amazon’s that use beam forming, but the idea is to make it happen (immersive 3d sound) without rear or ceiling speakers.

Would be interesting to check it out, but no extra funds (or room) for me either.
