EZMax is your source for Beautiful Music, 24 hours a day - if you're just discovering EZMax you might be rolling your eyes thinking - "great, trapped in an elevator with my grandfather's music" - well, all we ask is you give a try, approaching it with an open mind. There are a couple of things you should know right out of the gate - we feature no breaking news, no political content or social commentary, no sports and no loud, off-colour announcers. So what's left? - Beautiful music.
That was actually the name given to a radio format back in the late 1960's, but there has been a lot of great music and countless amazing recordings made since that format began to fade from the scene in the late 70's
We've embraced that format, incorporated recordings that were simply not available at the time and expanded it's footprint.
Thanks to the Internet, we are worldwide - back in the day the best you could hope for was 50,000 watts of clear channel sound reaching just a few miles in every direction.
There was also a recording technology that was loosing public favor at just about the same time - and that was called quadraphonic sound.
Well, what's old is new again - Vinyl record sales are out pacing compact disks, Quadraphonic sound has been replaced with surround sound - and beautiful music is back.
Because the music is timeless, most of the quad recordings of the 70's are as fresh and alive today as they were then. And most Home Theatre Systems today have Dolby Pro-logic II circuitry that expands the surround programs we offer every night back to their original glory.
This Monday, at 8pm NYC time (with a repeat at 2am Tuesday) we bring this all together - and aim to prove that beautiful music is not only American Popular Standards set to lush orchestrations and emotionally charged chorus'.
Tonight, on Monday Surround we offer a collection of 14 songs Recorded at Egrem Studios in Havana, Cuba, over a 6 day period in March of 1996. The resulting album achieved soaring sales in Europe, reaching the Top 10 in several countries, including Germany where it topped the charts.
In the United States it reached number 80 on the Billboard 200 album charts. In 2009, it

was awarded a double platinum certification from the

IMCA (Independent Music Companies Association) which
meant there were sales of at least 1,000,000 copies
throughout Europe. In the United States only Selena's
1995 album "Dreaming of You" has sold more copies in the Latin music field.

We are, of course, referring to The Buena Vista Social Club! It won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
The Social Club is essentially a super-group of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of one American (slide guitarist Ry Cooder) under the direction of Juan de Marcos González. But it's the natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette that's the real star, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction.

This debut album was released on September 16, 1997, and despite its success, it remains the only standard
studio album exclusively credited to the Buena Vista
Social Club (though there have been rumors of a follow-up in the works). Monday's playlist....

1. "Chan Chan"
2. "De camino a la vereda"
3. "El cuarto de Tula"
4. "Pueblo Nuevo"
5. "Dos gardenias"
6. "¿Y tú qué has hecho?"
7. "Veinte años"
8. "El carretero"
9. "Candela"
10."Amor de loca juventud"
11."Orgullecida"
12."Murmullo"
13."Buena Vista Social Club"
14."La bayamesa"

We should point out that this was released in 5.1 surround sound. This is a format that can not be played properly on Stereo radio - so we do what we often do - we take the original multi-channel recording, and remix it using a Regular Matrix (or QS) encoder.
Because this alters the phases of the various channels - when played in stereo - it offers a brighter, "wider" sound than regular stereo. Also, when listened to through headphones, it actually tricks the brain into thinking there is sound all around you. Finally, when played through a system equipped with a decoder or a Dolby Pro-logic setting - the instrument placing around the room is restored.

So please join us at 8 for one of the masterworks of Latin rhythms - The Buena Vista Social Club
