So how's it sound? I've often thought about snagging this one when it comes around. A&M tapes are a crapshoot. One will be nice and discrete, while the next is StereoStereo.

Well, I snapped up a Q8 of this one and it took a good listen to figure out what was going on. It's pretty discrete, although I find the way the mixed the drums to be a bit distracting. Here's a quick breakdown of the title track:

Vocals: Front Center with unprocessed vocals at half volume rear Center.
Harpsicord: Front Left
Piano: Front Right
Bass Guitar: Back Left
Drums: Back center, also mixed to front center at lower volume.
Background Vocals: Mixed mostly to the rear, but detectable in the front.
Percussion: Back Right

All in All, not bad for an A&M title. I've heard worse from them. I guess I could describe the mix as very smooth. At first listen, it sounds like stereo, but when you pay attention, you can really detect the individual elements. No black holes is always a plus! I gave it a 6. Not awe-inspiring, but certainly a good effort. Content-wise, I only got this album for the title track - the rest of the album is typical 70's love fluff.

Actually there is no bass guitar.
In fact, no guitars at all.
It's 100% keyboard (plus drums), including bass, making it the answer to a trivia question.

What other big 1970's album (containing two #2 hits) was all keyboard (no guitars)?

Well yes, but...Jarre's album didn't have two #2 hits...but Gary Wright's THE DREAM WEAVER did, and I believe he even brags about the fact there is just him(and drums)on the album cover(years before, Lee Michaels used to do this often).

I have the CD-4; good mix but crappy pressing.

Strange.

A&M's CD-4 discs are definitely some of the better ones, quality-wise. They came to the game late (1975), taking advantage of improvements in the production. Another reason -- not so good -- is the conservative nature of their mixes; less separation = lower distortion. LWKUT is not so bad in this respect.

A sad reality of consumer technology is this: when it comes to flaws, the public has a long memory and short patience. (Some people still won't buy a plasma screen because "they burn out so quick".) Just as a trouble-prone system starts to turn the corner on getting bugs worked out, consumers move on. By 1980, when CD-4 really started to become practical, the system was all but dead.

Funny you should mention plasma TV's, eggplant, because I sell them (and CD's) for a living. I encounter those comments and objections every day. People are still convinced plasmas don't last as long as LCD, and that the gas leaks out, etc. etc.
I let them know that those problems have long since been solved, and they have nothing to worry about.

CD-4 had possibilities, but the improvements in the technology came, as you stated, too late for
the format's survival. As for A&M's pressings, I agree that usually they were good. Not so in the case of C&T. There were bubbles in the vinyl that created a scraping sort of sound; also had it on my copy of Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust" CD-4.
Right now I need to get my demodulator fixed; one channel out. Hope I can find someone who can do it reasonably.

This is one of my quad 'luv-it-'n'-hate-it' titles....I do like the crisp sound of the recording--and the quad sound expands what was good about the stereo mix, no denying that(hence the overall '7' rating). But....this is not the amenable, friendly breeze of the Carpenters, and when it tries to be soft, Toni Tennille's vocals are always too strong. And Daryl Dragon's keyboard/synth work always grated on me, absolutely unsubtle, and often too up front even when the song seemed to demand less, not more. The best I can say about this one: C&T got progressively worse, not better, so if there had to be C&T quad, just as well this album was the choice. YMMV, of course! :)

The best thing about the CD-4 issue of the LWLUT album is the quad mix of "The Way I Want To Touch You." The original stereo version on the A&M stereo LP was actually the mix that C&T released independently in 1974 on 45 before they were signed to A&M records. That original stereo mix was very lackluster and most every element was placed center in the mix. The CD-4 mix, (even folded down to is stereo) is much better and the individual elements can be heard a lot more clearly. I've uploaded the quad mixes of TWIWTTY & LWKUT on You Tube.

I like this. Bought my first copy on Q8, along w/ Carly's Greatest and Joni's Hissing the day I got a Q8 installed in my new '76 Buick. Great mix, nice performance. Broddy Bounce gets up on its hind legs and barks. Very poppy, but cool. Perhaps one day, this album will be rediscovered like Mancini & Esquivel were 15 years ago. Until then, along with Christopher Cross, it will be relegated to the 10 for $1 bin, at least in estereo. Since '76, I've acquired the CD-4, 2ch LP, CD & "Por Amor Viviremos" on 2ch LP, the album en Espanol. Capitan y Tennille.

Most A&M Quads aren't duds, just the Q8's they released in their 2nd batch. All "Quad lite." Baez' Shadows was the first A&M Quad. It was a good mix. The 2nd batch didn't come out on Quad LP. The later A&M's are usually pretty good mixes.

Yes, I've heard those plasma "wives tales." Sadly, most brands don't even offer plasma any more. Elite was the best. Pioneer bailed. I've got 2 1080p Panasonic plasmas, a 42" & a 60" from '07 & '08. Nothing available today, including the current Panasonics, looks as as good as those screens. I bought a current 42" 1080P and then a 42" 3D 1080P Panasonic and returned them both. They weren't as bright and the colors didn't pop. Yes, I fiddled with the settings. Technology taking a quantum leap backward.

Well, after inquiring about whether or not it would be possible for this to be reissued, I was forwarded the following comments

when I was around a&m studios after “love will...” was a huge hit, I walked by the “quad mix room” and heard that song being re-mixed by their “quad specialist” team of engineers. I popped in for a quick listen and heard NOTHING that resembled my mix. I asked if they would like my assistance with this, and was told that was “their job”.
oh well..... “whatever”...

Ugh....so I guess that's a no then.

a bit of a head-scratcher as to who mixed this in Quad since the CD-4 sleeve made no mention of it.

i just assumed it would be A&M's regular in-house Quad guys Bart Chiate & Marv Bornstein and you'd think its all but confirmed here in AOQ's post mentioning A&M's "Quad specialist" team, since the only other folks who mixed Quads at A&M with any regularity were Warren Vincent and Dick Bogert and as far as we know the latter duo mixed their Quads primarily for CBS labels incl. Columbia, Epic, etc..

now, curiously, Vincent & Bogert's Quad mixing style was of the "Bass Rear Left/Drums Rear Right" variety (e.g. Minnie Riperton, Miracles, Tower Of Power, Return To Forever, Dan Fogelberg, Michael Martin Murphey) and looking at Q-Eight's assessment of the channel layout for this one (Bass Rear Left/Percussion Rear Right) makes me wonder if it wasn't a Vincent/Bogert mix after all..!?

i also suspect Vincent & Bogert mixed the Billy Preston Quad as well, since its in a similar style to this one and those previously mentioned CBS mixes.. but i digress.. 🙂
