A rare Quad release from a '50s tape source. One of the most popular classical releases in world history, this America-meets-Russia exercise--Kiril Kondrashin was the conductor--hit the top of the charts(for 7 weeks) and remained on the Billboard charts for a staggering 125 weeks, in the process making Mr. Cliburn an international star.

Jon,

Strangely enough, about ten or twelve years ago I came across one of those 8-track tote boxes at a church yard sale, and about half the titles were Q8's, which really shocked the hell out of me. Most were RCA's, too, and this was one of them. Nice haul, I'd never thought of Van's stuff before in Quad, at the time was too busy with rock. Well, we all gotta catch up eventually, eh?

If ever there was a natural for the DV treatment, this is it.
I don't really agree? It's a 3-track tape source, and it's already had an almost perfect reissue on 3-channel SACD. But I'll let people who have heard say if the mix is somehow worth hearing.

To hear it differently, I'd suggest listening to the actual live performance that won him the Tchaikovsky Prize in 1958. The sound is mono, and it's not good mono, but the performance shines through. And you can stream it on most services.
