The soft fail version seems to help a lot when playing damaged CD-4 discs (I haven't yet purchased the software so I don't have specifics), more details about how it works are in the AES paper.
I suggested a dynamic low pass filter type playback NR system (akin to the Philips DNL or National Semi DNR) to Louis Dorren to use on the F/B difference signal in his new CD-4 decoder design, he wasn't interested.
