Anybody else see this article in yesterday's New York Times? When the writer says that "[t]he result is something like an enhanced version of surround sound," I don't think he's using the term in the way we would. But I don't see why these transducers implanted in a car's A-pillars and windshields--5, 8, or 10 of them--couldn't support 5.1 (or 7.1, or Atmos, or whatever).

What do you expect from the general press? They have no technical background and accept the verbiage of the marketer at face value. Attaching transducers to fixed panels is not new; I remember such going back into the 70's. Lately, they have been used for "hidden" in-wall speakers. The problem is that the panels are not designed to acoustical standards and require finessing and/or EQ to sound decent. Notice there were no comments about sound quality. I wouldn't believe them if they were included.

This is just an attempt, admitted, to reduce vehicle weight.
