The Dolby Digital 5.1 -> Dolby Surround downmix process differs from the process done with Dolby Labs Dolby Surround hardware encoders.

I knew Roger early in my career at Motorola. Just before he jumped to the greener pastures at Dolby. He is brilliant at audio.

DD 5.1 -> DS (software/firmware) downmixing provides a full bandwidth surround channel, which (IMHO) works better with DynaQuad.
