That Threepenny Opera with Raul Julia, with a great mix by Don Young, is a treasure! It was on my shortlist of most-wanted classical titles.

And Tony Randall reciting texts by Edith Sitwell? Get out! Facade is a wacky project, but much more than a novelty. Kudos to D-V for rescuing it; can't wait to hear the new mix.

Michael Dutton is my Santa Claus.

A little D-E ditty for ya!

I used to be a burly man, and now I'm just a cheap hussy

with 4 on the floor, he makes it easy, no need to be fussy

come one come all to this Quad party, and don't be tardy

not a tosh in site and even got GOS on the line

switch and sway, bring it all our way, it's all just so fine

now this is the end of my ditty, don't try and look too pretty

we'll just pity the fools that will dilly dally

and thank our lucky stars it's all so ducky, that the Wizard's hard at work

hurrah hurrah, we're all in awe, as another Dutton day has arrived!

Many thanks for this post - very interested in the John Williams suites (people asking me what I want for Christmas will be getting this link!) At the risk of being perceived as sacreligious and / or naive, if these brand new mixes were from the original analog multitracks, why not 5.1 as opposed to 'just' quad? Is Quad the D-V 'house style', which somehow perpetuates the legacy perception of the recordings?

Curious to know.

It'll be interesting to compare Mister Dutton's mix of the Close Encounters & Star Wars Suites - Gerhardt / NPO with the Dolby Surround version.

I have this CD. I also have the "Three Penny Opera" SQ LP. I can't wait to compare both to these new discs, which I'll be ordering after the first of the year.

Looks like MJD is making up for lost time! I'll be ordering after the first of the year.

Three Penny Opera should offer more soundwise on SACD than its LP counterpart. If I recall correctly, the album clocks in at about an hour, which undermines the sound quality of any LP.

You made me look. My quartz-locked digitization is 58:12. Yikes!

That's true, but I'm thinking more about the mix.
Based on Columbia Records QUAD analogue masters for A Chorus Line, A Little Night Music, Company and Bernstein's Trouble In Tahiti and CANDIDE, I have no qualms that Bertolt Brecht's THREE PENNY OPERA will positively sparkle via Michael J. Dutton's QUAD SACD remaster!

I'm curious about the mixing credits listed on the product page. "New stereo mix from the original analogue multitrack tapes by Michael J. Dutton" makes sense given that there was no dedicated stereo mix in 1976 and I believe it's been said here that the later stereo mix that made it to CD isn't very good (or am I confusing that with "Annie"?).

But what's up with "Additional quadraphonic remixing from the original analogue multitrack tapes by Michael J. Dutton"? I don't mean to suggest for a second that there's anything nefarious, I'm assuming something needed to be done for some reason and I'm wondering what and why.
