Fascinating article Kirk, although a moot point as far as broadcasting goes; I'd be interested in @chucky3042 thoughts on the testing.

Earlier this year, I posted a proposal on RadioDiscussions.com that
the ATMOS remixed songs (since the remix proposal is for the
popular songs likely to have been played on the radio) be
broadcast as Matrix encoded Quad on Stereo FM (or even
Stereo AM) stations.

The regular posters there weren't enthused.

One of the many things I don’t understand from this report of the FCC tests is how they sourced identical material in all formats. It says that-

"The five selections, commercially available on quadraphonic discs were:
Swan Lake -Leonard Bernstein & New
York Philharmonic
Young and Foolish -Ray Conniff Singers
Moon River- Hugo Montenegro
Gates of Love -Mystic Moods Orchestra
Stars and Stripes Forever- Henry Mancini"

But these discs surely weren’t commercially available in SQ, QS and H formats?

IMHO, the statement in the article means that the FCC/NQRC
used Discrete Quad (master) tapes from the major record
companies (CBS/Columbia, RCA, WEA Group) of their regular
commercial releases.

The Quad tapes were run thru encode/decode hardware
supplied by the proponents of SQ, QS, H.

Ah yes, I'd missed the early reference to "the various matrix encoders". I'd like to see the report itself as the results are very strange, but can't find a copy on line.

Unless the Surround Sound mix was very complex.
In those cases, SQ and QS lagged pretty far behind the Discrete playback.

I remember being one of the listeners during the NQRC tests.
When they played the track in Discrete 4-Channel, it was always clear which format was on.....
