Yeah, i was afraid that might be the case--did you read all of the reviews i linked? One of them advanced your same critique; when i link reviews, i try to give a spectrum cuz it's a subjective game! I'm sorry you didn't dig it. Maybe someone will buy it off of you . . .
Don't get me wrong I am glad I got it and enjoyed the experience. I did read the reviews, that is how I went back for the extras with Albert King.
Oh well, from a Black History Month perspective it is a must and for me being about 20 years old at that time, I have vivid memory of the time and vibe

The French Connection (1971) BD:
1. 5.1 DTS-MA surround mix is not bad considering the age.
2. I'd read that the colour grading is weird but decided to see for myself and can confirm that it is weird. Colours appear really "washed out". I'm not sure what colour(s) they removed but it just looks faded. Detail/resolution is fine though.
3. Worth getting if you can find it cheap though. It's been released several times - this is one I got: The French Connection / French Connection II Blu-ray Release Date December 1, 2008

The Painted Bird (2019) BD:
1. An excellent DTS-MA 5.1 mix. Lots of discrete action going on most of the time in all channels. Awesome lows from tanks + sharp, jolting gun fire.
2. Fidelity is excellent.
3. Superb cinematography/performances/direction.
4. Some scenes are pretty repulsive and it's a brutal, violent watch.
5. There's a thorough, interesting and revealing 2hr documentary on the making of the film in there too, so there's about 5hrs of entertainment on the disc including the movie.
6. It's Region B-locked. I put it in my Region A player and it displayed an apology that the licenser has only made it available in Region B territories. Never seen an apology before! I switched the region to B and then could move the subtitles into the black section below the image.

Phillip Borsos' 1982 Canadian 'Western' The Grey Fox with an outstanding performance by Richard Farnsworth [4K Restoration/Kino Lorber] With Music by The Chieftains. Audio is three channel STEREO and the fidelity is superb!

Remembering El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, who was assassinated on this day back in 1965

I have the two-disc Special Edition from 2005. Listening to the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack–good mix that puts me right in the middle of the action throughout; the use of surrounds is especially effective during dynamic crowd scenes when Malcolm delivers ever more powerful and incendiary speeches (Denzel Washington is phenomenal in the role). Terrence Blanchard's score really comes alive in the mix, as well. Highly recommended–especially the 1972 Oscar-nominated full-length (just over 90 minutes) documentary Malcolm X that shows up as a bonus feature on disc 2!

What a missed opportunity for Criterion to debut their UHD4K disc releases [rumored for 2021]. Amy Heckerling's fantastic FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH with a superb screenplay by Cameron Crowe is announced for a '4K Remastered' BD~V release for May 11th. Methinks by the time Criterion does release their debut Native UHD4K discs, Jeff Spicoli's Pizza is going to be VERY COLD!

STRAIGHT OUTTA AWESOME Black History Month Surround Sound Mix
1614186677200.png

I listened to the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix and it was straight outta this world! Right from jump street i was sweet spot sonic blown–chopper blades rumbling, police scanner chatter and news soundbites swirling round the room and my subwoofer going boom, Boom, BOOM! The mixers had a LOT of fun throughout, taking advantage of the soundstage and i could really feel the RAGE in the music–i was totally sucked in and taken for a wondrous spin (both in the studio and live) . . . this is one ima be enjoying again and again and again! Highly recommended!

On March 23, WARNER ARCHIVES will release an extended Native UHD4K VERSION of BATMAN V. SUPERMAN; DAWN OF JUSTICE ULTIMATE EDITION [HDR10/DOLBY ATMOS].

What I do find significant is, AFAIK, this is Warner Archives first foray into the UHD4K market since over the years they have released significant Remastered in 4K classics ONLY on BD~V. I hope this remains a trend since Warner Archives fastidious attention to detail is on par with Criterion.

The extended cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice includes 30 more minutes of story and action not seen in theaters! Also includes the Theatrical Version of the film plus over 2 hours of bonus content. From director Zack Snyder comes Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, starring Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent in the characters first big-screen pairing. Fearing the actions of a god like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham Citys own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than its ever known before.

Rewatched this wonderful documentary for Black History Month

standing in the shadows of MOTOWN
The film focuses on the work of a group of studio musicians known as The Funk Brothers, telling their story intercut with live performances. The stories the members tell are engaging and captivating, and the performances are absolutely electric! So much fun! I watched with the DTS 6.1 soundtrack, and the whole experience brought me pure, unadulterated JOY! Interviews are crisp and clear and front-centered and the musical numbers take full advantage of the soundstage–my sub was LOVING it! So was i–very highly recommended! Don't skip the extras on the second disc, with more sonic delights from the jam session!

A Black History Month Documentary Double Feature!
1614460665890.png

The Criterion Blu Ray release of the 1996 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary picture also includes the documentary Soul Power (a documentary of the Zaire 74 music festival that was scheduled to take place right before the fight). When We Were Kings sports a 5.0 DTS-HD surround track, and Soul Power plays in Dolby Digital 5.1. Both take advantage of the sound field throughout and are especially powerful during the music numbers and the fight. I used to show When We Were Kings in my Engl-ish classes, but i'd never seen it in surround! The film still holds up very well. I had never seen Soul Power before. Although I wish it had more music–much of the film focuses on the preparation and behind-the-scenes machinations–i really enjoyed the concert footage. I can see myself revisiting the numbers from the show (B. B. King, James Brown, The Crusaders, Celia Cruz, Miriam Makeba, Bill Withers, The Spinners, et al), and i will MOS DEF return to watch the entirety of When We Were Kings–it's an Oscar winner for a reason! Highly recommended–Ali Bomaye!

I'm not aware that this has ever been released in a better quality Blu-ray has it... anyone?
