Still traveling to the Heart of my 4K Collection: from "The horror! The horror!" to "The wonder! The wonder!" I LOVE this one, and so do both critics and directors: #19 on the 2022 Sight and Sound Critics' poll and #18 on the Directors' poll. It has never looked and sounded better than this 4K release!

Curious which version did you end up watching?

Great question! I do watch each version (theatrical, redux, final) about once a year, feeling each one has something special to offer. But since i'm going through those Sight and Sound polls, and since the date listed on the polls is 1979, and since that is the version i fell in love with when i first saw it in a theatre in Chicago upon its initial release with a group of friends preparing to leave for college, and since We were all tripping balls that day and rewatching that version still seems to trigger horror/beauty flashbacks, i went with the 1979 theatrical version last night! wOw, that was a long-ass answer to a short, and to-the-point question! Stay Surrounded, Comrade!

Very cool! I first saw it in Chicago as well but it would've been a home video release unfortunately. I'm not intimately familiar with the film but I think I've seen a couple of versions over the years. I think I'll start with the theatrical version to refresh my memory. Thanks!

4K–Let it reign! This magical musical drops in at #10 on the Sight and Sound Critics' poll and #53 on the Directors' poll

Too bad it only contains the Final Cut. I've been hoping for a definitive box set of all released versions of the film.
Same here. I bought the book-packaging release that has all 5 cuts years ago on Amazon for like $8 (on my birthday too!), and I’ve been waiting for a release with 4K versions of all. According to the Blu-ray.com forums, all the 4K’s of the Final Cut only have the Atmos track, which is truly jaw dropping (I have the iTunes digital version of Final Cut 4K, and even lossy, it’s demo worthy)… but makes some SFX changes. Would love to see a 4K Dolby Vision set with all cuts, and all audio tracks. Figure if I wait long enough it will happen.

Sounds good on paper, PM, but doubtful Warner who owns the rights to Blade Runner will embark on such a reissue of ALL 5 cuts in Native UHD4K. Perhaps one of the reissue companies might do so but with 4K titles still 'trickling' out of the studios and so many of those titles being consigned to reissue companies other than the majors and the very fact many of them are 'exclusives' being remastered and released abroad, I'm justifiably thrilled to just have Ridley Scott's FINAL CUT in such an elaborate box set!

I wouldn't expect that, but a set with 4Ks for the two cuts that were definitely edited on film or in digital—the theatrical and Final cuts—with the rest on 1080p Blu-ray would be great.

Great I had to look a long time to find a used DVD and had trouble with the video window size....
Will be happy to toss that out.
Cameron has prepared a brand new restoration/remaster of The Abyss to HIS specifications so hopefully we'll be getting a perfect Native UHD4K in the proper aspect ratio .... all previous releases have been wonky, at best!
