One of my FAVORITE Christmas movies came out on Blu-ray in an awe-inspiring 4K restoration with a new English dub track
1608845446963.png

Now, i'm a pedantic purist, so i watched the film in the original Japanese language DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound, and the fidelity is phenomenal--this lossless track truly trumps the DVD release! The surrounds are in full use during the action sequences--the streets of Tokyo really come alive! The soundtrack never sounded better either! And, i will say that the English dub is also really exceptional--not my usual reaction to dubs! Great extras on this disc as well. HIGHLY recommended!

Anybody seen Pixar's (it still galls me to say "Disney Pixar") Soul yet? The story is all about music--jazz, specifically--and it's supposed to have an Atmos soundtrack, with music by Jon Batiste and a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. So in principle it could be something really special. It's been getting rapturous reviews.

Thanks, lined up to see along with WW-1984... didn't know Batiste was involved.

Just watched this moving documentary on Blu-ray in surround

Since the documentary is about Japanese composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto, the 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack really comes alive during the musical performances, clips from films he has scored (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Sheltering Sky, The Last Emperor, The Revenant), and studio play. But the real gem here is a 65 minute film of a concert presented in amazing, discrete surround sound:

"Ryuichi Sakamoto: Async at the Park Avenue Armory"
(65:10, HD) is a 2017 concert with the celebrated composer, who dazzles the crowd with a rich, unpredictable soundscape and use of a psychedelic LED screen to help create mood. The program is presented with a 5.1 DTS-HD MA sound mix.

Clement, now it's my turn to say DAMMIT! I was going to purchase this but thought it was going to be just a straight documentary. I love Sakamoto's compositions and now it will have to be a must buy with the inclusion of the 65 minute discrete concert of his fabulous music.

BTW, a few years ago, I purchased this Stereo SACD from CDJapan although I wasn't crazy about the contents. Will have to listen to it again:

I don't know Sakamoto, although from his discography, it looks like I've heard his scores for a good half-dozen films. Do you have Async: Surround from 2018? (I see it already goes for crazy prices.)

To be honest, i only picked the movie up because of Ralph's head's up to the Kino Lorber sale! I browsed the sale discs looking for surround mixes, and when i saw Coda had one, i read the reviews i posted; the description of the concert sealed the deal for me! It is absolutely transcendent! I knew Sakamoto from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence--as an actor first! I adored the score and was surprised to see his name as composer when i the credits rolled! I don't know that i feel a need to score (as it were) Async: Surrounded, as the performance on the Blu-ray i have is so damn stunning aurally, i can't imagine it being better; and to see him performing it live just takes it to the next level. Let us know if you decide to pursue it; knowing my addiction to surround, i may follow you!

The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio surround track on this Criterion Blu-ray is Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad GOOD!

I had only seen this film on a 19" black and white television when i was a kid! What i experienced on my Big Bambú was truly revelatory--across the board! Since this thread deals with surround sound, let me just say that the soundtrack fires on ALL speakers--the score sounds phenomenal and the plentiful slapstick comes alive all around with the dialogue firmly anchored in the front (with spectacular placement and panning following each character across the 2.76:1 W I D E S C R E E N canvas!). A really stellar presentation! Classic . . . albeit turgid!

I originally saw this one on a small black and white tv too. I bought this disc a few months ago and have yet to watch it. Must watch it soon!

Well Sir, the last (& only 2nd time) I've seen this was a bit over a year ago, pre-pandemic in a theater. It is an incredible movie Christmas or otherwise. I have never listened to the American dub yet. I am intrigued that Hana, the drag queen is voiced by trans-gendered American actress Shakina Nayfack & I think Kon would have approved. I don't own the disc... I probably will soon!
Thanks Clement!

Another Christmas favorite that plays well all year long

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track certainly delivers during all of the action, but this release is from 2007, and i can't help but wonder if i should upgrade to 4K--Yippee Ki Yay 4K, that is!
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Die-Hard-Blu-ray/557/#Review

Of course we all love this movie. Good all year long is true but I always include it my must see again movies in December. I watched a few days before Xmas along with another fave of mine, The Long Kiss Goodnight.
Not as well know or popular as Die Hard it fits into that little cult niche mostly claimed by John Carpenter all tho this is a Renny Harlin movie. I will say that The Long Kiss Goodnight probably paved the way for John Wick more than Die Hard:

Edit: The surround is at least the equivalent of Die Hard with a few make you jump in your seat effects. Big fun... I don't know if it's in 4K.

Hoo-wee! Very nice. We sprang for a month of Disney+ and made Soul our New Year's Eve movie. Not enough of Jon Batiste (and Tia Fuller, Linda May Han Oh, Marcus Gilmore and/or Roy Haynes), and those numbers don't make full use of the Atmos. But the Reznor-Ross bits sure do. Highly recommended.

JUST FINISHED WATCHING THIS ABSOLUTE DOOZY OF A HORROR MOVIE ON AMAZON PRIME [$3.99 rental and worth EVERY penny] AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! VERY INTENSE!
