NETFLIX'S latest Dolby Vision 4K entry into 'horror' is writer/director Mike Flanagan's Limited 7 hour+ series MIDNIGHT MASS. Having been raised a Catholic, it was unnerving but ultimately rewarding binge watching this cataclysmic unraveling which takes place in an insanely weather torn and remote island which has seen most of its inhabitants flee due to weather related and financial circumstances. Zach Gilford who was wonderful in Friday Night Lights leads a cast of mostly unknowns save for Katie Siegel, Annabeth Gish and Hamish Linklater who falls prey to the machinations of a local Monsignor who seemingly rules the island.

I will say that cinematically and surround wise, Flanagan does a yeoman's job of holding one's interest but whether Midnight Mass is ultimately your cup o' tea will very much depend on your tolerance of its religious mind numbing message.

Days of Heaven (1978) BD:
1. Alas, not much surround action going on with this DTS-MA 5.1 mix. It's very "stereo-centric". Fidelity is good though. Some decent lows from the train and farming machinery.
2. It's a dream-like movie. Great cinematography and Linda Manz had some funny lines with her voice over.
3. Bare bones region-free cheap BD here: Amazon.com: Days of Heaven (Blu-ray + Digital) : Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard, Linda Manz, Robert J. Wilke, Jackie Shultis, Stuart Margolin, Timothy Scott, Gene Bell, Doug Kershaw, Terrence Malick: Movies & TV

The Conversation (1974) BD:
1. Not a lot going on in the surrounds but if you up them a few dB, it helps give a sense of space.
2. A gem of 70's paranoia. Superb score from David Shire and a superb performance from Gene Hackman.
3. Cheap Region B here: The Conversation [1974] [Blu-ray]: Amazon.co.uk: Gene Hackman, Francis Ford Coppola, Gene Hackman: DVD & Blu-ray 4. Also check out Alan Pakula's The Parallax View (1974). Mono only unfortunately. Region A-locked BD here: Amazon.com: The Parallax View (the Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] : Warren Beatty, Paula Prentiss, William Daniels, Walter McGinn, Hume Cronyn, Kelly Thorsden, Chuck Waters, Earl Hindman, Jo Ann Harris, Jim Davis, Alan J. Pakula: Movies & TV

The Conversation and The Parallax view are both brilliant movies.

From Kino Lorber THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME [1080p/DTS~HD MONO/from 16mm]

Of interesting note in the extras contained on the disc: Universal Pictures was dreadful at preserving their film negatives. Of the 110 features starring Lon Chaney, only 8 survive. Sounds familiar via Universal's fire in 2008 which destroyed countless Master Tapes not to mention all the masters lost through neglect and disposal!

From the BBC's MASTERPIECE THEATER SHERLOCK SEASON 1 in [Upscaled] UHD4K [HDR10/DTS~HD MA 5.1/2 disc set/270"] A stellar reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's super sleuth transposed to the 21st Century with excellent performances from Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. IMO, a significant upgrade from the previous 1080p BD~V. And currently on sale @ AmazonUS for under $16!

I watched this amazing World War II true story drama last night about two Czech soldiers who receive orders from London [Operation Anthropoid] to kill Hitler's third in command, Reinhard Heydrich, the 'architect of the Final Solution' which resulted in the extermination of 5000 Czech citizens. The two leads, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan are extraordinary. Technical merits are superb with a robust DTS~HD MA 5.1 soundtrack.
