Florian Hoefner Trio "Desert Bloom" - Dolby Atmos mix now available as a lossless download!

The third Atmos release from IAA's ongoing partnership with Alma Records just went live, following Monkey House and Cinque. It's been available to stream on Apple Music for a few months now:

It's an impressive surround mix considering the minimal instrumentation - the drums are in the front & front height speakers (with upright bass mostly in the center channel) and the piano fills out the side, rear, and rear height speakers. The sound quality is phenomenal as well, with excellent dynamic range.

I just want to add that two weeks ago, this album won a Juno Award--basically a Canadian Grammy--for Jazz Album of the Year. I like Hoefner, who, before moving to Canada and establishing a relationship with Alma, recorded several fine albums for the Seattle-based indie jazz label Origin. He's an adventurous composer who's sometimes described as a "cerebral" pianist--one of those potentially off-putting labels which to my mind just means sensitive and thoughtful. (Hoefner started his career in Europe, where he's still a fixture on the festival circuit, but he studied at the Manhattan School of Music under Jason Moran, whom I would also put under the "cerebral" umbrella, and saxophonist Dave Liebman.)

I also want to second Jonathan's opinion of the surround treatment: this is how to do sparely instrumented acoustic jazz in Atmos, IMO. (The guys at Blue Note could learn a thing or two from John "Beetle" Bailey!)

Here's a short review of the review of the album, if you're on the fence. I know many of us just dropped 30 quid on another SDE release this morning, but I hope a significant number of us can also support what Alma Records and IAA are doing here. If we buy 'em, they'll keep 'em coming!
