Note: this release does NOT contain a surround sound audio track, which is a shame because this duo makes music that's perfectly suited for surround sound, but this is an inspired release and is worth checking out! :)

Ocean Sounds (2018) is an intimate studio film from acclaimed Russian duo iamthemorning (Gleb Kolyadin and Marjana Semkina).

Shot at and named after a remote recording studio on a Norwegian island, the footage offers a behind-the-scenes insight into the recording techniques of two of modern progressive music's most talented composers. The content captures iamthemorning's live set-up from the last three years, with the setlist consisting of songs from their first three studio albums and an unplugged recording of Blue Sea (the first track to be written for the duo's upcoming fourth album and exclusive to the blu-ray).

The studio was designed with panoramic windows that allow the stunning back-drop of Giske Island and the Norwegian Sea to be integrated into the performances (a location that is featured in glorious high-definition on this blu-ray).

Marjana commented, "It was the most inspiring place for us to work in, surrounded by the sea, mountains, wild flowers and gorgeous Norwegian sunsets. All of the natural splendour we don't see that often."

The audio recording, mixing and mastering were handled by regular collaborator Vlad Avy. The film was produced and edited by Miles Skarin at Crystal Spotlight, and the watercolour artwork was designed by Constantine Nagishkin.

This edition includes the film and hi-res audio on blu-ray as well as the standard audio on CD (in digipak with 12-page booklet).

Have you seen and heard it already for QC?

Yes. I had never heard any of their music before now, but I had heard of them.
I'll have more to say about the disc later on, but it's a shame that this was not mixed in 5.1 surround, cause I think the music is well-suited for surround sound, especially with the string players that the duo uses to augment their sound.
The sound is really crisp and clean, and the band used a fantastic studio with an awesome view, which you can see in the trailer here.
Even though this is not in 5.1 surround, this is still a cool release for everyone to check out.

Whoa! Absolutely love their music. Was completely unaware of this. Bummer that it's not mixed for 5.1. Odd that they'd go with the additional expense of blu-ray, but not bother with a proper 5.1. Maybe next time

Thanks for the heads-up, Ryan.

I agree that the lack of a surround track on a modern Blu-ray video is disappointing, but EVERYTHING else about this release is beyond superlative. If you’re a collector of music performances like me, this one needs to be on your shelf!

I feel exactly the same. Eagerly bought it. Surprised and disappointed to find no surround -- which really would work very well with the music --but still love it regardless.

I agree with you, very beautiful music. I bought the disc a couple of years ago and was disappointed there was no surround track. By the way, if you look at the cover of the album you'll see a mountain. That's the neighboring island where I live and hiking this mountain almost daily. When on top I can see the studio in the distance. By chance I even know the studio owners, great guys :)
