Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow (1967)

Cover.jpg

Looks like there was a quad mix of this album... :phones
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrealistic_Pillow
Available to stream -
Apple Music - Surrealistic Pillow (2003 Bonus Track Edition) by Jefferson Airplane
Tidal 360RA - https://tidal.com/browse/track/235059195

I only have the following tracks as quad though...

1 - She Has Funny Cars
2 - Somebody To Love
3 - My Best Friend
6 - 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds
8 - How Do You Feel
10 - White Rabbit
11 - Plastic Fantastic Lover
14 - Go To Her (Bonus track)

So tracks 4 (Today), 5 (Comin' Back To Me), 7 (D.C.B.A. - 25) and 9 (Embryonic Journey) weren't mixed it seems?

Seems to follow the same mix philosophy of some of the RCA quads with drums mixed to the back.

Wonder why it was never completed? Anyway, credit to Sony for releasing it now...

This is a major find, well done sir!

It's funny, I just found this yesterday on Amazon in 360RA and had a lovely listen to it on a long bicycle ride through Airpod Pros, imagining what it would sound like through speakers. Now I'm hearing it in quad!

Bought this record in 67 age 13 as I tried to get hip to the San Francisco sound of the Summer of Love.
Great to hear it again in full-fidelity surround, holds up well for being recorded 55 years ago.

You know, I was thinking. I am sure it is not true. But it is a good marketing ploy by the executives, to start off with this cool MCH and then goes flat into stereo. A newcomer to surround would have to say WOW, what a difference.

The mind boggles when stuff like this appears. Was the mixing session cancelled or abandoned? Were there plans to finish it? Was it set aside in favour of a better album?
Always makes me wonder "Why?". At least when a completed album comes around we can sort of confirm that it was slated for a release it one time or another. But abandoned or incomplete mixing sessions leave only questions - not answers.

I'd bite on that. I have a copy of the "Worst Of". I think from the reel as shared around.
Is this actually released released? Not just some streaming bs? (Which I truly don't ever want to hear.)

Absolutely! I get it. I mean, if the album came out in 1975, I could see why the quad might not have been released. Quad was kinda fading by then. But the late 60s? That would have been prime time!!!
