Continuing with the Fleetwood Mac box set and the Penguin album from 1973.
With the departure of Danny Kirwan this marks an even sharper turn towards a more pop/less blues sound.
Which is not a bad thing, in fact this album is better than I remember.
The Bob Welch track 'Revelation' is excellent
And the sound is a bit better on this one

Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On

(2013) Remastered Deluxe Expanded Edition

1622922999951.jpeg

Wikipedia:

Then Play On is the third studio album by the British blues rock band Fleetwood Mac, released on 19 September 1969. It was the first of their original albums to feature Danny Kirwan (although he is also listed on two tracks on the earlier compilation The Pious Bird of Good Omen) and the last with Peter Green. Jeremy Spencer did not feature on the album apart from "a couple of piano things" (according to Mick Fleetwood in Q magazine in 1990).[citation needed] The album offered a broader stylistic range than the classic blues of the group's first two albums. The album went on to reach No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart, subsequently becoming the band's fourth Top 20 hit in a row, as well as their third album to reach the Top 10. The album's title, Then Play On, is taken from the opening line of William Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night — "If music be the food of love, play on".

Then Play On is Fleetwood Mac's first release with Reprise Records after being lured away from Blue Horizon and a one-off with Immediate Records. All subsequent Fleetwood Mac albums were released on Reprise Records up to the self-titled 1975 album. The album's original UK release had an unusually long running time and was released with four different song line-ups. The original CD complied all the songs from the two US LP versions, both of which omitted tracks from the original UK version. In August 2013, a remastered edition of the album was reissued on vinyl and CD, restoring its original 1969 UK track listing and adding four bonus tracks from the same era.

Fleetwood Mac - Kiln House

(2013) Japanese SHM-CD

1622926876129.jpeg

Wikipedia:

Kiln House is the fourth studio album by British blues rock band Fleetwood Mac, released on 18 September 1970 by Reprise Records. This is the first album after the departure of founder Peter Green, and their last album to feature guitarist Jeremy Spencer. Christine McVie was present at the recording sessions and contributed backing vocals, keyboards and cover art, although she was not a full member of the band until shortly after the album's completion.

The album title is taken from the name of a converted Oast house in Truncheaunts Lane, near Alton in Hampshire. The house was leased by the band, who lived there communally with their families for a six-month period in 1970. Mick Fleetwood was married to his wife at the house on 20 June 1970.

Spencer, who sat out for the previous album, Then Play On, played a much more active role during the Kiln House sessions. His retro 1950s homages and parodies dominate the album, although Danny Kirwan's songs are almost equally prominent. "Buddy's Song" is a partial cover of "Peggy Sue Got Married" with new lyrics listing a number of Buddy Holly song titles. The song is credited to Buddy Holly's mother, who received the writing credit after Buddy's funeral from the original composer, Waylon Jennings.
An early version of Kirwan's instrumental "Earl Gray", entitled "Farewell", was later released on the compilation The Vaudeville Years.
The album reached No. 69, on the Billboard 200 album chart on 7 November 1970.

Guano Apes - Bel Aire

(2011) Columbia Records Europe

1622929420106.jpeg

Wikipedia:

Bel Air is the fourth studio album by the German alternative rock band Guano Apes, and the first released after the band's reunion in 2009. It was released on 1 April 2011 on Columbia Europe, eight years after their previous album Walking on a Thin Line.

The album marked a notable change in style for Guano Apes, as it shows the band leaving their alternative rock roots behind and incorporating elements of dance and pop music in their songs, with synthesizers and electronic drum loops fulfilling prominent roles in multiple songs.

Bel Air entered the German album charts at No. 1. Single "Oh What a Night" reached No. 37 on the German charts.

Vehicle - Ides Of March

1622932126897.jpeg

Wikipedia:

Vehicle is the debut studio album by The Ides of March, released in 1970. The single and title of the album, "Vehicle", became the fastest selling single in Warner’s history.

In his retrospective review for All music, critic Mark Deming wrote "the band sounds tight, enthusiastic, and emphatic on all ten tracks" and that the album "documents this band's limitations as well as its strengths, but ultimately it's a good week's work, and shows the Ides of March had more up their sleeve than their only hit." Conversely, Robert Christgau called the album "Schlocky... more schlock than anyone needs.

All songs written by Jim Peterik, except where noted.
  1. "Vehicle" 2:56
  2. "Factory Band" 3:02
  3. "Sky Is Falling" 2:48
  4. "Home" 3:38
  5. "Wooden Ships/Dharma for One" (David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Paul Kantner, Ian Anderson, Clive Bunker) 7:14
  6. "Bald Medusa" (Mike Borch, Peterik) 3:02
  7. "Aire of Good Feeling" 3:14
  8. "Time for Thinking" (John Larson) 2:30
  9. "One Woman Man" 3:15
  10. "Symphony for Eleanor (Eleanor Rigby)" (John Lennon, Paul McCartney) 9:42

Joe Walsh - But Seriousl, Folks…

(2012) Audio Fidelity / Elektra Entertainment

1622934472903.jpeg

Wikipedia:

But Seriously, Folks... is the fourth studio album by the American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joe Walsh. The album was released in mid-1978, on the label Asylum. It included the satirical song "Life's Been Good". The original 8:04 (8:57 on CD releases with a speech at the end) album version of this track was edited down to 4:35 for single release, and this became Walsh's biggest solo hit, peaking at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The album also featured the other four members of Eagles – which Walsh had joined two years earlier – as well as singer-keyboardist Jay Ferguson, a former member of the groups Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne (who co-wrote one track on the album), drummer Joe Vitale from Walsh's former band Barnstorm, and bassist Willie Weeks.

In a contemporary review for The Village Voice, Robert Christgau wrote that, although Walsh has "a gift for tuneful guitar schlock", most of the album's songs fall "far short of the irreverent shuck-and-jive" of "Life's Been Good". In a retrospective review, AllMusic’s Al Campbell said that the album is "Joe Walsh's most insightful and melodic", and "captures a reflective song cycle along the same thematic lines of Pet Sounds, only for the '70s".

Wikipedia:

Future Games is the fifth studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, released on 3 September 1971. It was recorded in the summer of 1971 at Advision Studios in London and was the first album to feature Christine McVie as a full member. This album was also the first of five albums to feature American guitarist Bob Welch. “He was totally different background – R&B, sort of jazzy. He brought his personality,” Mick Fleetwood said of Welch in a 1995 BBC interview. “He was a member of Fleetwood Mac before we’d even played a note.”

Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees

(2013) Japanese SHM-CD

1623007602879.jpeg

Bare Trees is the sixth studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, released in March 1972. This is their last album to feature Danny Kirwan, who was fired during the album's supporting tour. In the wake of the band's success in the mid-1970s, Bare Trees peaked at number 70 on US Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 1988.

Mick Fleetwood was particularly impressed with Kirwan's contributions to the album. "It's a well-rounded album. Like Lindsey, Danny had the chops with layering techniques, and the ability to know what's right and wrong in the studio."
