Thoughts?
Yeah, fidelity is super in 5.1, 7.1 and Atmos. In stereo, it's way too loud comparitively. I call the mix mostly immersive. Yes, the height speakers are active, but during listening, I don't necessarily notice them. My ears cannot really tell much difference between the Atmos mix and the others on this disc. I gave iet an 8 on the poll thread. I'd say, in general, it's way too much money unless you are somehow a diehard fan of the band....which for sure I'm not.

I've only played this once, and I was not impressed by the Atmos. Not much in the heights as I recall.

[ Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band - The Gordian Knot ]

This is one example of Atmos mix to make you 'believe' you are there within the band playing. The same record/mix criteria that is the distinctive of Auro-3D (also in this Blu-ray).

There are not so much panning, ping-pong or moving sound effects ala Yello-Point, but the locations of each group of instruments, among with the wide sound of drums is fantastic.

This is one of the Atmos albums that I take advantage of my Wide speakers (9.1.4) and you can 'see' with your eyes closed, where the trumpet's section is located, and even distinguish each different individual trumpet in a different position.

I do not listen to music like that, I don't care were the trumpets are. I don't like the music, that's the biggest problem for me. Would have helped if it was a mix with good use of the heights, but it ain't.

OK. That's fine. Each one enjoys what gives them the greatest pleasure.

My previous post wanted to indicate that there are different approaches to mixing in Atmos. Either sound ping-pong effects, discrete separation of instruments or the natural hearing perception of a live stage concert or room studio recording.

When we invest in many speakers and expensive AVR we like and expect that virtually "all speakers" are active. That's why we use to associate Atmos with Height channels enough content. That's a legitimate desire and I am included in that group of people.

It's funny that certain people, me included, may not like or appreciate a certain music style, But, by the magic of Atmos, start to like something you could never imagine. This has happened to me, an old Prog Rock fan, with things like electronic music, Yello-Point, Billie Eilish and others. Those 'things' were never to my liking before.

But everything has a limit. I think I could never stand reggaeton or hip-hop mixed with good Atmos effects. Jazz/Big bands are in the middle point for me now ;)

For fans of 90’s ambient techno like Future Sound of London, Global Communication, and to some extent the FAX label:

Says lossless, is Atmos, is great. On the 4th track now, it’s mostly modern day club techno leaning, but isn’t afraid to peel the beats back to something more abstract.

EDIT: looking around more about this group, sounds like they started as a blog digging up old disco/italo house records and making mixes, then they got into making their own music and they brought back the mixtape thing as an Apple Music Radio show. Lots to dig into with them, and this is the first I’m hearing of them. This seems to be their only Atmos/surround release at the moment.

This sounds very interesting will give it a listen

Here’s an upcoming one:

No idea if that will go on streaming services. His last one didn’t (I finally got around to ordering a copy from importcds thru Amazon), but that was before streaming services really adopted Atmos. The album IS up on Apple Music but the one track is showing as lossless only when played.

And here’s some more electronic goodies I’ve found:

https://music.apple.com/us/album/fragments/1584968878This has been on the upcoming for a bit, now fully out. I need to sit down and give it a listen

and there’s also this side album from one of the members of Justice doing a conceptual soundtrack for a movie that doesn’t exist

And a few more Joe Hisaishi things have popped up here and there:
