Looking forward to this NEW [previously LOST] Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Recording FIRST FLIGHT TO TOKYO recorded LIVE in Tokyo in 1961 which will be available from UMG/Blue Note in multiple formats including a single layered SHM~SACD which will contain the entirety of the 2 disc performance on one disc

A previously unreleased live recording of drum legend Art Blakey with a classic line-up of the Jazz Messengers, featuring trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt. It was captured on January 14, 1961, at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo during the band's first-ever tour of Japan. Co-produced by Zev Feldman and David Weiss, the audio was newly transferred from the original 1/4" tape reels.

Hadn’t played the 2CD Bearsville set in many many years, so listening to this Analog Sparks SACD was almost like hearing it for the first time.
It’s sprawling and a bit bloated but some great songs and arrangements.
Side 4 is actually quite good despite its Zappa-esque story.
Plenty has been said about the recording quality. It’s not great but I can live with it.

playing a most enjoyable redbook track here at work

Boy, that was rather fast delivery from MoFi. Wonder how the SACD Stereo layer sounds?
