Paul Simon, Paul Simon, There Goes Rhymin' Simon, and Still Crazy After All Years, all in conversions from discrete sources ranging from just okay to excellent. Man...the mix and the sonics and the material on the debut album, especially--they just shine. And the greatness of Rhymin' Simon is unrelenting. (I can't decide if I prefer Roy Halee's mixing style to Phil Ramone's, or if it's a toss-up.) As for Still Crazy: I think the album was overproduced to begin with, and I guess I side with those who find the mix a bit wonky, too. But is it also the case that every last copy of the Q8 sounds warbly and oversaturated?

Nina Simone, The Best of Nina Simone (1970), in a conversion from a discrete source. These days I can't play her without thinking of the title of Fantastic Negrito's latest (fabulous) album, Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? Even before the world set her "off," and even if she's not singing "Mississippi Goddam," she sounds urgently, gloriously righteous.

Sly Stone (post-"Family"), High On You (1975). Lucky enough to be able to compare conversions from both Q8 and SQ LP, and they both sound great; the matrixed mix doesn't really sacrifice anything in terms of separation. I wonder if Dutton could ever do a two-fer of this, together with Small Talk, which is a killer overlooked album.

Sibelius in the background as I work today. First the early tone poems The Lemminkäinen Suite and The Wood Nymph (Osmo Vänskä and the Lahti Symphony), then the "Seven Symphonies and Kullervo" bundle (Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra)--all on BIS, all in FLAC 5.0 format, downloaded from eClassical.com but also available on SACD. Both the immersiveness and the dynamics on Lemminkäinen are much better than average for BIS, by the way.

Tipper – Surrounded
DVD-A 5.1

"Tipper excels as a producer of absorbing downbeat electronics; his tracks feature waves of processed guitar, effects lines that squiggle or chime in a unique way.
His work often takes full advantage of the 5.1 mix: He favors an interplay of effects that ebb and flow through the mix in a phasing, circular fashion"

Mahavishnu Orchestra BIRDS OF FIRE [Columbia Records/AF QUAD SACD remaster] Thought I'd spin this in anticipation of receiving the latest SONY Japan QUAD transfer [won't be shipped until Santana III is released]. Honestly, on my system it really sounds wonderful.....not as bad as the 'pundits' allege! Guess my disc 'tweaks' REALLY work.
