That Smooth Criminal and Beat It show very obviously their source material and the Beat It sadly the guy wanted to let you know it was him by overlaying his name throughout the entire video lol.

Wonder if they were originally shot on film, if so the Jackson estate (or whomever own them) would be able to order a real restoration. When you look at the quality of the 4K remaster of Thriller, which was clearly shot on film, the difference is beyond measure.


For the Thriller video, is it just the YouTube compression making it look bad, or is there some DNR? There is significant detail loss and a bit of waxiness, from what I see.

YouTube compression sucks compared to 4K Ultra HD discs obviously - and they’ve made it look more like HD video than film, but despite the DNR it’s still got massive amounts of fine detail that wouldn’t exist were it shot on video. The chain link fencing for example would be a blurry mess, here it’s very finely resolved. Doesn’t look like a silly amount of edge enhancement either.

Not bad for a 2009 production.
