NativeDSD at High End Munich!

Once again, the MOC in Munich, Germany will host High End Munich, the world’s largest audio show from May 9-12, 2019 managed by the High End Society.

A trio of the stars from NativeDSD Music – Managing Director Jared Sacks, Chief Technology Officer Jonas Sacks and Label and Marketing Manager Floor van der Holst will be there. Say hello if you catch us at the show!
What’s happening at the show?

For starters, Jared Sacks will be hosting a demonstration of some of his latest DSD recordings from Channel Classics and NativeDSD’s Just Listen label on the top of the line, Nagra Audio HD DAC X, a DSD 256 DAC, at the “Meet The Experts” session sponsored by Nagra Audio on Friday, May 10th at 1:00 pm UTC+02.

Jared will answer questions including: What are the differences and similarities between making DSD 256 recordings with a symphony orchestra and a DSD 256 recording with a jazz trio? And more importantly, how will the results sound on Nagra's unbelievable setup that includes the Nagra HD DAC X – a $65,000 Stereo DAC with DSD 256?

His presentation will include a preview of an upcoming Just Listen Records album in untouched DSD 256.
And there will be a couple more surprises from NativeDSD at High End Munich. So be sure to watch for those if you’re going to the show.

(And if you aren’t, don’t worry. We will share the news in a future NativeDSD newsletter – and on our NativeDSD social media sites on Facebook and Twitter).

We invite you to join us at the show!

That is absolutely fantastic, there is still room to grow, sounds fantastic just on a You Tube clip.

That is absolutely fantastic, there is still room to grow, sounds fantastic just on a You Tube clip.

I heard the Nagra HD DAC X playing Stereo DSD 256 selections by the Yuko Mabuchi Trio and Louis Armstrong at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in Denver last October.
It was pretty fantastic. But more than I would spend for a Stereo DAC and Audio System.... :)

Starting off the show, I went to room 1030 where Rene Laflamme, Nagra's Sales and Marketing Manager was unveiling the latest member of the company's HD product line—the Nagra HD DAC X. The HD DAC X is the top of the line successor to the Nagra HD DAC which offers stellar Stereo DSD 64, DSD 128 and PCM playback using Nagra's fine analog designs with a digital engine designed by Andreas Koch of AK Designs.

The new HD DAC X adds Stereo DSD 256 playback to the earlier HD DAC and a host of improvements including ultra-low noise power supplies, dual mono construction, improved damping and vibration control and a new digital core.

Nagra HD DAC X, HD Preamp & HD Monoblock Amp

Rene gave listeners a taste of what the HD DAC X ($65,000) with the Nagra HD Preamp ($59,500), the Nagra HD Monoblock Amplifier ($86,000) and the Rockport Technologies Cygnus Loudspeakers ($62,500) can do using a pair of Stereo DSD 256 recordings: "St. Thomas"—a Sonny Rollins composition performed by the Yuko Mabuchi Trio on their excellent debut album from Yarlung and an Analog Master Tape to DSD 256 Stereo transfer of a Louis Armstrong track that was mastered by Rene and is available on the 2xHD label. Both tracks were reproduced with notable refinement and ease. The HD DAC X will be available later this year.

Nagra is also planning a new model of the HD DAC that will come out in Spring 2019. Rene told me that owners of the original Nagra HD DAC would be able to upgrade their units to the level of the new HD DAC model. It is part of Nagra's commitment to their owners of the lasting value of their products. Nicely done.

Rene also reveals his favorites in DSD 256 among the 100 albums that 2xHD has released to date - in most cases from Analog Master Tape to DSD 256. An impressive list!

An interview with Andreas Koch and Jared Sacks at High End Munich 2019.
Includes a discussion of Koch's work in developing DSD, SACD, the Sony Sonoma DSD Workstation and his role as "Mr. DSD".

In the world of digital audio, Andreas Koch is a pioneer who built the world's first fully asynchronous digital audio sample rate converter, early digital filtering and processing systems, a 48 Channel Pro Studio Digital Recorder for Studer, and digital audio processing for the AC-1 and AC-3 systems from Dolby.

In 1997, Koch played an integral role in developing Direct Stream Digital (DSD). This included managing the development of the Sony Sonoma 8-Channel DSD recording, mixing and editing system and the Super Audio CD (SACD) format. He also developed one of the industry's first DSD converters that played DSD natively, without PCM processing, leading some to refer to him as "Mr. DSD".

Andreas talked with Jared Sacks from NativeDSD Music about his work with DSD. Including DSD's initial role in archiving music, the emergence of the SACD format, and the founding of Playback Designs, his audio company that offers a variety of Digital to Analog Converters (DACs), an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC), CD and SACD players, and related products.

During the High End Munich 2019 show, Playback Designs introduced the SPA-8 Amplifier, a "monstrous" statement next generation product that drives any speaker with 800 watts per channel into 4 ohms and 400 watts per channel into 8 ohms.
Andreas also notes that his products are "only a tool" that needs DSD releases from artists like Jared Sacks and the companies at NativeDSD to deliver the best music experience for listeners and music fans.
