I understood all this. But even with a CD audio layer you can get far more than 2 hours of music on the SACD layer. BIS got 5 hours at least on their single-layer issues, and even without compression on a single layer you can easily fit 90+ minutes of music. The CDs would have the split layout of course.

But if you recall, those 4+ hour single layered BIS SACDs were 16 bit stereo [PCM>DSD] and IMO, sounded excellent and this article from Positive Feedback will outline the 'alchemy' BIS utilized for their 'ULTRA' extended play SACDS [written by our very own QUAD LINDA]:

Right, they were 16-bit recordings but they weren't 16-bit on the SACD. They were DSD64, which is the only music format you can have on SACD. If you only care about stereo on a SACD layer and use DST compression you can get 4 hours. If you don't use compression you can still get close to 100 minutes as I understand it.

I didn’t realize that the Grover was originally a 2 LP set. Can’t wait to hear this almost 70 minute quad release!

Years ago - before I knew of the existence of Discogs - I spent many months hunting down a decent release of Soul Box on vinyl. It was a joyous day when I finally found a copy that had not been beat to death.

Two months ago I got a Verve label copy on CD. I was delighted that I could now listen to the whole set without having to get up and either flip the record or change records.

I never considered the possibility of hearing this in Quad. My copy is enroute from DV.

After waiting months for the announcement I can be patient. I anticipate that I’ll have my discs in hand before Massachusetts gives me a shot in the arm.

I just had my second shot yesterday. Thankfully, no side effects although my co~worker did have a fever and was slightly nauseous and exhausted but it means the vaccine is working! Happy Listening Mr. E. Michael Dutton came through this time with some astounding new releases in rock, jazz and even classical.
