Can't produce 5.1 surround from DVD/Audio discs; 2-channel only.
My DTS 5.1 discs are fine
My SACD/Hybrid/5,1 discs don't produce any sound
My system is a 2005 Denon S-301/faux surround, with 2 speakers and a subwoofer
Blu-Rays are fine in DTS, or Dolby Digital
What gives?

Toslink only supports lossy DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 streams. I’d suggest switching to HDMI or the analog 6-channel output if you want the lossless streams from SACD, DVD-A, and Blu-Ray

Can't do it because the Denon does NOT have HDMI inputs!
What's an analog 6-channel output?
Even if the Oppo has one, the Denon doesn't have a 6-CH input; I don't think?

It looks like that Denon unit you're using isn't actually a 5.1 amp - it only supports two speakers and a subwoofer. You need a 6-channel amp/receiver with either HDMI or multichannel AV inputs (as shown above).

The interesting thing is this; the Denon has a DVD/Audio player; it's broken
subsequently, when it's working, it produces 5.1 audio, from DVD/Audio, & SACD 5.1 discs
But when you're using a secondary source, like OPPO, it does not
