So, you mean the soundtrack album of Tommy, 1975. Not The Who's Tommy from 1969?

A&M had originally announced five albums that were slated for QS release in the US, including "A Song For You", from the Carpenters, and "Come From The Shadows", from Joan Baez. The latter was the only one of the five to hit the stores. The ad went on to say they were using an improved vinyl formulation for the quad releases, because in quad, "when the record pops, the whole room pops". I grabbed the Joan Baez album as soon as I saw it, and was very pleased with its sound. I had a Sansui QS-01 decoder connected to my system and, considering how good their first effort sounded, I was bummed that the others got tabled.

I wonder if Billy Preston's Music Is My Life was intended to be one of those five initial QS LP releases? The quad mix's extreme "four-corner" directionality would make it more suitable for a matrix format.

I don't think they ever specified a particular title, or titles, slated to be EV encoded. They were eager to get into quad, but their playing "musical formats", having skipped from QS, to SQ, and ultimately settling on CD-4, may have shot them in the foot. That system had nothing on cats when it came to being finicky! They had some great artists; it saddens me to what could have been if A&M had thought things through.better.
I agree that they should of stayed with QS because SQ required special mixing techniques. QS/RM versions would of turned out better. Then to jump to the finicky CD-4 system!

And although not officially adopted by the WARNER label ;
there are 2 Beaver and Krause albums encoded using their own type of RM encoding.
Additional information is kinda sketchy but allegedly Mary Travers , Mary Travers on WB is supposedly EV-4.
Personally I think both The Travers and Ghandharva albums came out "before" the first EV-4 Encoders were issued or in use (Early 71).

And by default Alice Coltrane had a QS album released in 77 , Eternity , long after Warner Electra Atlantic dumped all things quad -(apart from a repressing of The Best of The DOORS ).
Atlantic Records did have those DY-4 albums from Syntonic Research , correction I should say dynaquad like encoded.

Also from the Moss Music labels -Candide , the Classical label switched from QS to SQ .

Edit : "before"

I have a Candide classical album that has QS logos on the label, and on the front of the jacket, but claims to be in SQ on the back of the cover. Having played it through the Surround Master, I'm convinced the comment about SQ was probably in error.

You may have the error copy.

My copy has only reference to SQ , no QS whatsoever. And the recording and Studio team are very different.

FWIW Quad Incorporated reported these findings back in early 1980. According to the info Larry Clifton received from the Label they had at least four encoded in SQ , not QS . All final Candide editions.

Played reasonably well with my Fosgate btw. It's Classical and Mostly ambience..... very very few are full blown surround.

PS do you have any pics of your disc ?

You cite these Billboard articles, but what we need are links to see them. We don't all have a vast collection of them to thumb through to see these articles.

Would if I could !

And I don't have a vast collection of Billboards as a matter of fact i have none . Not a single one . My info came from the links to Billboard magazine in "American History Radio".

I spent 4 months reading through those back issues on line for any quad items of interest. I don't think you realize what a large task this was . But I don't have any regrets as I have an interest in those early and prime quad years.
Any quad notations I found of interest .....mostly things I was not aware of , I made a note in my little green book , sometimes capturing quotes , and sometimes not. But I found a wealth of quad information and I'm satisfied with my results.

I collected approximately 110 pages of quad items of interest in my notebook .

I would suggest you try it , maybe try just reading through a couple of months and see just how difficult it was. For your information Most if not all of those Billboard back issues are 80 plus pages. You might just find a greater appreciation for what I did .

I did it because I was committed . Originally I was seeking info on Quad matrix broadcasts and I knew Billboard would have what I was looking for.
Once I started I found it hard not to finish.

(Attached a pic of my notebook.)

Hell I even stayed off QQ for the entire period I was reading through these back issues.
