My favourite quadraphonic receiver, featuring plug-in CD4 demodulator, is the Trio KR-8340, which is owned from new, and all original. I'm in the process of re-installing my quad system, and I'll add more pix and info as I proceed.

Rarity: COMMON

Beautiful! I know you are looking forward to getting everything set back up again. Please post pictures of the completed system when you finish.

Thanks. I love the look of it, especially the two-tone fascia. Wish I could remember where I put the wood end-cheeks.

Yes, I'm looking forward to it, but it's taking longer than hoped, as the four AR speakers (AR-5 front & AR-12 Rears - or vice versa) need woofer roll-surround refoaming.

I'll add photos at each step.

Nice receiver man! Is Trio made by Kenwood by any chance?? Also is this a common unit? What's the average price? I would consider one of these as the receiver for the second quad set-up.

Hi, thanks.

I think, although I could be wrong, that Trio is the original Japanese brand equivalent of the US Kenwood brand. So Trio made Kenwood. Trio was initially used in UK, but then changed to Kenwood, also. AFAIK, Trio was used in UK to differentiate from Kenwood which was associated more with appliances, etc..

The 8340 is a fairly common unit, but doesn't get the same attention, or regard, as the better known Pioneer, Sansui, etc.. It's a great receiver, which matches the AR-5s beautifully, especially when the BTL is engaged, in stereo.

does it have the ability to "synthesize" quad sound from 2 channel sources? im sure it does, because most do, but i just wanna know for sure.

Ah, it's a while since I used it, so I'll have to search my memory. As well as CD-4, it has built-in support for SQ and RM. I think the latter can be used to synthesize 4ch from 2ch, IIRC. When I set it up, I test it.

how do you like the kenwood kx-700 cassette decks?

my first cassette deck was a kx-700 i bought back in 1973 while in japan. it seemed ok. i lost track of it somewhere around the mid '80s.
i have a chance to get another one but not sure i want it yet.

I really like the KX-700 (I have managed to collect three of them - two Kenwoods and one Trio).

It performs very well, with very good sound quality - say 7/10, with a Denon DRS-610 at 8/10 and Nakamichi DT600 at 9/10.

The reason I like the KX-700 so much is, like you, it was my first deck. I traded it later as the usual upgrade bug bit. Recently, as nostalgia struck, I was amazingly lucky to get my hands on three! I didn't expect to find even one.

So, it's not for their performance - which is nothing special - but for nostalgic reasons, that I have Kx-700s - I'm just fond of them. They are built well being very substantial and surprisingly heavy.

Here are some pix of my Trio KX-700-

yeah, i understand the nostalgia reasoning. it would be the same for me if i get another one. the one i'm looking at supposedly works and the price is quite reasonable.

I bought all mine over the last year off eBay, and paid £0.99 for two, and £4.99 for the other (ignoring shipping). The third one doesn't have it's plinth base, as it was console mounted, so I'm looking for another to scavenge it's base.

ohhh pretty scope on the upper left side, what model is it?

do we get to see a picture of everything lit up?

Ah ha, well spotted, 'though a little OT :) It's an ancient Scopex RM4010A scope, that's over thirty years old, but still works great - probably could do with recalibration tho'. I'll add better photos later, as I've just bought a better camera. So, eventually, I will add a pix of it all lit up, just as soon as I get it all connected up :) - I've got to sort out mains routing first.

I could do with a thread about cameras recommended for equipment photography...
