Thanks for the info. Are the Dutton Vocalion Surround SACDs a limited print run thing, like the AF MCh SACDs were and so when they're gone they're gone?

Cool - just ordered the Super Country as I didn't have that one. :)

Depends on the source of the album.

If it's licensed from Sony Music (or any of the major labels), then yes it will have a limited time of availability.
Based on a set time or number of copies.

On the other hand, if it's an original Dutton Vocalion recording and artist, like the Upswing! by Pete Cater Big Band Surround Sound SACD, it will remain in the catalog for as long as the album sells.
Which explains why Upswing!, which was released in 2009, is still available and in print from Vocalion.

thanks again.

so I take it that if there are titles from DV that are Sony Quads we shouldn't hesitate to pick them up now,
as they could go out of print at any time if DV sell out of their print run or the license expires, whichever's first?

Exactly.

Well I had to get the Shostakovich & Ustvolskaya Piano Concertos, for two reasons. Firstly I like Shostakovich, and secondly it was recorded at Watford Town Hall, where I first saw Hawkwind!

Shostakovich & Ustvolskaya Piano Concertos
https://www.duttonvocalion.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=CDSA4804

The Shostakovich Piano Concertos disc has been on sale for a single pound for a while now, somewhat bafflingly. It's popular music performed by first-rank musicians (the first movement of the 2nd Piano Concerto was in Fantastia 2000 and the whole thing is tuneful. Stereo only, but still.

Could be a sign that the Shostakovich Piano Concertos SACD isn't selling well.

well its Stereo you see, nobody wants that!

oh, hang on, that's not right! that's what we're so often told about surround if a MultiCh title doesn't sell.

not referring to this disc in particular but a flop is a flop in 2 channels, 4 channels, 6 channels, 246 channels. just sayin'..

At 1 pound, on sale, it's certainly not a popular one.
Regardless of the number of channels or format.

Or maybe it's a 15 year old title that they're blowing out the remaining stock of, so that they have warehouse space for newer things. I don't think many titles stay in print for that long, so it's not really fair to say it's an unpopular title based on the fact that they're selling it (currently) for ÂŁ1. It's still more profit than destroying the remaining stock, and definitely more profitable than a label that licenses titles dumping stock at a discounted rate whilst still paying the full license fee.

My Shostakovich & Ustvolskaya Piano Concertos (ÂŁ0.99!) arrived a few days ago along with Julian Bream Concertos For Lute & Orchestra (not in the Sale) with Vivaldi Concerto in D major, Kahaut Concerto in F Major, Handel Concerto in B Flat, Vivaldi in G Major & Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez. From my first listen.

So the Shostakovich & Ustvolskaya Piano Concertos is multi-channel, but it is just Concert Hall ambience in the rears, though it does give a feeling of being in a large space. For ÂŁ0.99 its good value, well played & well recorded and I like Shostakovich, and I discovered I liked the Ustvolskaya which was completely new to me.

The Julian Bream is very immersive, well recorded and obviously well played! Musically I prefer the Handel to the Vivaldi, and the Rodrigo to them all (but that is my quirky musical taste where I discovered I like much more modern composers to the older ones!). Worth buying.

interesting.. i guess you can look at it one of several ways.. for me, even though the Upswing! MultiCh SACD has been on the market for a good while longer than just about any of DV's other MultiCh/Quad SACD releases, it says to
me that maybe there's renewed interest in such an older surround title, due potentially in part to DV's surround release resurgence since they went Quad.. and a possible follow on could be that if there's a DV Surround title out right now that any of us is maybe on the fence about perhaps we should go for it sooner rather than later? after all, we've already seen the inflated prices some of the AF Quad SACDs are going for and they haven't been out of print for very long at all.. anyhoo, just sayin' (y)
