55 dB S/N - I've read that the (best case) S/N for vinyl is ~68 dB

Interesting that RCA had overcome both the (cutting) level and playing time (no more than 25 minutes) concerns by 1973-02.

IMHO, Mr. Isom chose an unusual way to compare (RCA) CD-4 cutting level with Stereo (average of some recent hit albums) cutting levels.

Unfortunately, it turns out that the baseband/sum signal does interfere with the carrier, sometimes to such a degree that CD-4 decoding is distorted (some of the Arista CD-4s, for example).

Some early Warner Brothers Quadradiscs were distorting as well.

EG : Deep Purple - Machine Head , Doobie Brothers -The Captain and Me.
