Elusive Disc is now selling a Stereo/Multichannel SACD Sampler featuring selections from several SACD labels. Of interest here is that some of the selections are otherwise unavailable on SACD.

Here's what Elusive Disc has to say about the sampler:

>>This eleven track sampler has been produced for Sony Electronics by Analogue Archive Pte. Ltd. the Singapore based company that owns the well-known audiophile jazz label Groove Note Records. This new sampler is the first SACD sampler to feature not only stereo and multi-channel but even more importantly, tracks by several different labels as follows: Groove Note (5 tracks), First Impressions Music (3 tracks), DMP (2 tracks), Hyperion (1 track).

Some of the Groove Note tracks (Anthony Wilson, Bill Cunliffe) on this sampler have not been previously released on SACD. The Bennie Wallace track number 11 has never been released on any format prior to this sampler.

The tracks are all pure DSD recordings, i.e. they were not transferred from analogue or digital masters to DSD. The range of music covers many different genres (classical to choral to world music and jazz vocals), from fully immersive multi-channel, all enveloping, breath-taking choral music and dynamic drum ensemble from DMP to the intimate and closely miked holographic jazz vocals from Groove Note's audiophile star Jacintha. The sampler also features the work of several of the top US and UK recording engineers e.g. Tony Faulkner, Tom Jung, Mike Ross and Paul Stubblewine.

"The sound quality [of DSD recording] is by leaps and bounds the best I've ever heard from a digital format," - Joe Harley

"The kind of resolution I am accustomed to while in the studio, listening to the direct microphone feed". - Joe Harley

The GRV1013-3 sampler disc is a very impressive and useful tool for the prupose of demonstrating the technical superiority of DSD/SACD as well as the wide variety of music available on the format.

Selections:

1. The Robert Hohner Percussion Ensemble - Ogoun Badagris - Multichannel and Stereo - (DMPSAM10). A stunning example of the sonic qualities available in the SACD format with magnificent dynamics and bass extension. Be prepared to be blown away!

2. Anthony Wilson Trio - Chitlins Con Carne - Stereo (GRVSA1008 ) . Grammy nominated and Downbeat magazine award winner delivers a smoking blues guitar classic in the tradition of Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery. This one really cooks!

3. Bill Cunliffe Trio - Ireland - Stereo (GRVSA1009). One of the finest piano trio recording available on pure DSD with exceptional detail, transparency and tonal balance. A beautiful ballad based on original compositions by American composer Samuel Barber. There is reference quality high frequency extension and air on this track.

4. Linda Rosenthal - La Paloma - Stereo (FIMSACD031). A light classical favourite from the renowned Asian audiophile label First Impressions Music. You will hear and feel all the warmth and presence and sweetness of the million dollar Stradivarius violin used in this recording by the versatile and talented Ms. Rosenthal.

5. Luqman Hamza - Feeling Good - Stereo (GRVSA1007). A beautifully recorded male jazz vocal album that features the smooth rich vocals of ex-Ink Spot Luqman Hamza. Thanks to the wonders of DSD, Luqman's voice, reminiscent of Billy Eckstine and Johnny Hartman, is catpured here in all its high-resolution glory.

6. Teresa Perez - Fantasia On Greensleeves - Multichannel and Stereo (FIMSACD041). Another of the most popular tunes in the classical repertoire is given an exquisute and moving performance by this award-winning cellist. You can feel and hear the resin on the bow and the wood of the cello in this fabulous DSD recording. The multi-channel mix gives you a tangible sense of the recording space and ambience.

7. River Of Sorrow - High Mountain Flowing - Stereo (FIMSA032). One of the few DSD recordings of classical Asian music, this is an impressive example of a traditional Chinese instrument recorded without any sonic or electronic embellishment and sets a new standard in the recording of acoustic instruments. Instrumental and tonal detail are superb as is the sense of air and ambience.

8. Jacintha - Autumn Leaves - Stereo (GRVSA1006). "A voice of heartbreaking purity" is how US jazz critic Chuck Graham described Jacintha's seductive vocals. Already an audiophile favourite, her version of the classic jazz standard Autumn Leaves has won her legions of new fans, audiophile and non-audiophile.

9. The Florestan Trio - Piano Trios by Debussy, Faure & Rave -Stereo (Hyperion SACD-67114) One of the most impressive new classical chamber recordings of recent years. This brilliant version of the great trio by Debussy features a sparkling performance by The Florestan Trio and was recorded by Tony Faulkner, a leading DSD/SACD advocate and a top classical recording engineers (Decca, Harmonia Mundi, Hyperion). The string tone on this recording captures lots of warmth and ambience and detail but still remains extremely natural and realistic.

10. Gaudeamus Sacred Feast - O Sacrum Convivum - (Tallis) - Multichannel and Stereo (DMPSAM09). From one the finest and most stunning DSD/SACD recordings to date, one that is a regular feature of many Sony SACD demos worldwide, this beautiful piece of choral music not only reproduces the breathtaking sound of multiple human voices with great fidelity but the multi-channel mix has captured all the ambience and presence of the recording space.

11. Bennie Wallace - Moodsville: When A Woman Loves A Man - Stereo (GRVSA1010). Recently recorded in New York City, this moody and beautiful slow ballad has never been released on any format prior to this sampler. Featuring the smoky tenor sax of Bennie Wallace the pure DSD recording seems to transport you into a jazz club with the quartet almost playing just for you. <<

There was a Sony SACD sampler in a machine at the local Best Buy. The first track was Line 'em Up by James Taylor, the fourth track was by Roger Waters. I forget the rest, but there was an instant that I though about grabbing it!

Oh, it's a pain to be old and responsible!

That's the 4 track Sony Multichannel SACD Sampler. Different from the Sony/Groove Note SACD Demo Disc.

They were giving out free copies of the 4 song one at CES 2002 in Las Vegas.
