Sadly it sounds like they are running into some roadblocks completing the surround mix of Apple Venus.

A couple of other interesting tidbits:

  • He has had conversations with Elton John regarding surround mixes.
  • Nobody in Simple Minds or Yes was very interested in the surround mixes. Steve Howe made a brief appearance to check out some mixes but then did not get involved again.
  • Practically all of the multi track tapes of Black Sabbath's core catalog are missing.
  • He does say that it is his intention to do surround mixes of every XTC album if and when the tapes are located.

ELTON JOHN? ARE WE FINALLY GETTING THOSE 3 MISSING ALBUMS IN 5.1?

As for Simple Minds, that's a bummer, as it would work very well. Yes is even more of a bummer because I was hoping 90125 would get a 5.1 mix.

Also lost multitracks are becoming more common now...maybe someone is stealing them

Once Upon A Time and New Gold Dream were remixed to 5.1 by Ronald Prent about 15 years ago. They were initially released on DVD-A, then later reissued as HFPA Blu-Rays. The 5.1 mixes are fantastic, though the multis were missing for one of the hit singles on New Gold Dream.

There was a DVD-A in a box set and a standalone HFPA Blu-Ray. I recall the first run of Blu-Rays had a pretty serious authoring error that only affected the stereo mix? It's easier to find today than the other two titles.

Wow, I completely missed these! Thanks for the info!

Steven Wilson is the guest on the latest XTC podcast. Very informative and they cover his work beyond XTC as well. I think most folks here will enjoy it.

Thanks for this! So many of my friends like XTC, but my knowledge of them starts and ends with "XTC vs. Adam Ant". I have "English Settlement" on hand, and will sit down today for a close listen and see if they strike a chord.

Thanks for this - I really enjoyed it. Interesting when he mentioned the only 200 people would buy/listen to a 5.1 Hatfield and the North release. If he is looking for things to remix in surround that will sell nicely, I recommend he contact Sony about the Miles Davis catalog. There are only a handful of surround releases of his music.

I get the impression that it's not so much money or sales driving his choices, but the fact that he puts a lot of work into the mixes and wants X amount of people to enjoy them. If it's a pretty narrow group, it isn't worth his time. I mean, I guess that is ultimately sales numbers in the end, but it's not sales for the sake of money type thing like it would be for most.

I'm not sure how into old jazz stuff he is. I think he also has to really like the stuff he is mixing as well.

The "glue" discussion starting with the Neil Young and Flaming Lips mixes is very interesting and telling...

Really enjoyed the multiple references to debunking the stereotyping of mixes being the live sound. So many surround naysayers bring up this tiresome argument. One of my favorites Steven mentions here is that the studio is another instrument. Also, comparing how he would mix AC/DC vs XTC. So spot on!

I nearly cried when he said all the core Sabbath albums are missing the multitracks :(
The references to "cocaine mixes" and to "Complicated Game" put a huge smile on my face!

Gah... why did Ape House announce plans for the Apple Venus surround without being absolutely certain that all of the tapes/elements were in place? Considering the very problematic history of XTC’s master tapes, I would’ve thought they’d be more careful about getting people’s hopes up.

In any case, I’m just going to proceed under the assumption that we’ve seen the last of the XTC surrounds, and be pleasantly surprised if things turn out any different.

(One thing I’m curious about — are the masters for English Settlement/Mummer/The Big Express *completely* missing? Or are there various individual songs for which the masters are intact? In other words, could they do a compilation a la Gentle Giant’s Three Piece Suite? If so, I wish they’d go ahead and do it.)

I wish the episode had delved more into the Elton John topic, ‘cause that seems to make little sense. Why not just release the missing Greg Penny mixes, rather than pay Steven for new ones? Unless he’s talking about potentailly doing mixes of the albums *after* Blue Moves?

I also wish he’d elaborated on his talks with Prince (and/or his estate). The fact that none of the box sets of the past few years (1999/Purple Rain/Sign O’ The Times) have included surround mixes wouldn’t seem to bode well as far as the Prince estate’s interest in such things.
