This blu-ray is a great recoRAMdation! Although the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is mostly front-centric, when music is part of the action, the mix really kicks in and all of my speakers are firing . . . in DIRECT mode, no less! Dean Martin singing "That's Amore" sounds great and La Bohème sounds even better! No ruse, here, RAM! All amore, baby!

Watched 1917 yesterday, great movie. The surround was good, but the Atmos was almost non existent, maybe a total of 1 minuet spread over the movie.
Yikes, really? I haven't cracked mine open yet. I watched Joker last night....what a freaking dark movie. Wow.
After I watched, I realized for a war movie it is mostly dialog and actually sort of silent in what is happening around, certainly the louder scenes are not actually over head, so it does make sense. Unlike Fury, which is a real big Atmos. I don't have it but I bet Dunkirk would be a big Atmos because of all the overhead planes.
In one of the extras discs in Apocalypse Now 4K UHD the Dolby Labs rep say's when watching a movie your attention is not supposed to be focused on sound rather than what is in front of you on screen.
I say, when you spend all this time, energy, and money on a dedicated room I want to hear some shit, man.
Here's another blu-ray winner from Criterion!
The lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix works really well with the tone and look of the film. Lots of wonderful ambient touches throughout coming from all directions during the street scenes and with those ubiquitous pigeons. And when the RZA soundtrack kicks in, my subwoofer rumbles with joy! One of the special features even focuses on the music: Flying Birds: The Music of "Ghost Dog," a new video essay on RZA's score by filmmaker Daniel Raim. There's also an isolated music track option, albeit in stereo . . . though We all know how to work around that one!

Miyazaki's 2004 release is now out in a steelbook!
The steelbook is slick! The blu-ray is evidently the same as the 2017 release. A purist, i listened to the Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. When the titular castle gets moving, the soundtrack really comes alive with all its steampunk glory--huffs and puffs and crackles and rattles and booming explosions abound! Actually, the soundtrack takes advantage of the whole field throughout with nice touches surrounding me. This one is another joy from Studio Ghibli!

I had the chance to see this in a theater when it came out. It was good but not great. There are hardcore anime fans who dearly love Miyazaki, but at the same time he's been "phoning it in" since Spirited Away. It's not surround sound but if you can find The Kingdom of Dreams & Madness documentary about Studio Ghibli it's well worth a watch:
Ghibli's latest full length feature Earwig and the Witch. It's directed by Goro Miyazaki, Hayao's son. It looks totally repulsive. It is all CG & I mean terrible bad little kids Saturday morning cartoon bad.
