When you are in the mood for something more adventurous do consider Satoshi Kon's filmography. Paprika is so psychedelic & fun, Millennium Actress Is a brilliant concept, Tokyo Godfather's a true & heart felt story & my most favorite movie to me from his work is Perfect Blue:

Despite the cover don't mistake this for some kinda soft porn thing. It's an exciting, dizzying spectacle of paranoia & mystery. It's as if Disney meets Hitchcock . It's placed at the dawn of the internet with chat rooms, & Netscape Navigator. I purchased on Blu-Ray about a year ago & only a couple of weeks ago I opened it up & watched. The video was remastered and an excellent step up from my DVD I've had for 20 years. The audio is remastered into DTS HD 5.1 and boy! They must have had some good tracks to work with this sounds as good as any big budget American feature film. I guess I would call this a Perfect Blue-Ray....

Perfect Blue was one of the first animes that i ever bought--your review makes me think it's time to upgrade! And Tokyo Godfathers is one of my favorite Christmas movies! I'm going to check out your other two recs--you have never steered me wrong! Stay Surrounded, Comrade!

SW, those prices on OLED 4K sets are all an all time low and what better time to treat yourself to the ultimate pleasures of 4K! There's also a lot of unique 4K
programming being broadcast on Amazon Prime and Netflix. And a lot of these older films are being remastered directly from the camera negatives and look astounding in 4K.

We ONLY live once, SW, unless you plan to be reincarnated as a Monarch Butterfly.

I'm really not one for conspiracy theories [although admittedly, some are tantalizing] but I did watch this odd Amazon Prime doc tonite outlining Stanley Kubrick's secret world......why he did leave Hollywood which he despised for England and focusing on five of his masterworks, Lolita, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey and his self professed favorite, Eyes Wide Shut and the hidden implications each film represented regarding rampant pedophilia in Hollywood, references to the Illuminati, the 'faked' moon landing, his 'mysterious death' and other assorted sundries. If you read the Amazon reviews, this doc is reviled but if you want to spend under an hour perusing this film, you can form your own judgments. Is Truth really stranger than Fiction?

Clearly not to be outdone is Doctor Sleep's extremely effective Dolby Atmos audio mix, which wastes absolutely zero time getting right down to business. A number of heavy atmospheric effects are put to use almost constantly, from the perpetual beating heart -- used more sparingly during The Shining -- to less easily-defined atmospheric touches, which completely envelop the listener in a very convincing manner. Height channels are also put to good use here, but even those without the extra two channels will find the unpacked Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track to be a more than acceptable substitute. Doctor Sleep features occasional jump scares but relies more regularly on an unsettling overall presence; discrete channels follow suit by sneaking up on the listener rather than perpetually clubbing them over the skull with shock noises. Likewise, the LFE maintains a strong and consistent presence during many scenes but is not afraid to be a little more "showy" when the situation demands it. Of course, dialogue is almost always given top priority and it sounds great with no obvious sync issues or other defects...but Doctor Sleep is definitely atmosphere first and speech second, so it's good to know this Atmos track is one of the most robust and effective mixes I've heard to date.

The Thing (1982) BD:
1. I watched this the other night for the first time in years and I still really enjoy it. It's my second favourite Carpy - closely behind Christine.
2. The surround mix is about on par with other flicks of this age. Nothing tremendous happening in the surrounds but fidelity is really good.
3. Picture is still pretty good but it would be great to get a new 4K scan and release.

The Thing (2011) BD:
4. I managed to pick this BD up for $6 and gave it a spin for the first time since I saw it back in 2012. I really enjoy this one too. Together with Carpy's remake, this prequel makes for a couple of fun watches.
5. Surround mix on this is a lot more dynamic than the 1982 one. A decent amount going on in all channels.
6. Great special effects combining puppets with CG.
