Yes, I saw the new release was in 5.1, so I wondered if they could possibly have the original stems archived from a 1953 movie. Maybe they just threw some modern ambient foley into the rears, and kept the front the same.

I've heard this for so long now, I'll believe it when I see it! (Sadly, this is my same response to a ever seeing a proper release of "The Abyss", despite a decade of rumors).

Actually, Criterion's War of the Worlds has a discrete 5.1 surround mix.

Ironically, the Abyss is shown on cable in a very healthy 2K version but I'm sure when it arrives as a Native UHD4K disc with a Dolby Atmos codec, it will be something very special. James Cameron has been very absorbed for the past few years with his Avatar Sequels which might explain the delay of The Abyss in a modern restoration. And perhaps like his incredible Titanic 3D upconversion, we might even have the ultimate pleasure of the Abyss in 3D [albeit 1080p] as well as 4K.

That's the only 5.1 mix I was talking about. I guess this means you've heard it, and it doesn't sound too revisionist?

Yes, it looks nice. It's only the theatrical, though.

I'm not as optimistic as you on these fronts. Yes, Cameron raved about his wet-gate transfer, and how it was just about to be graded in HDR. However, there are plenty of great productions that never actually get properly distributed, which is half of what QuadraphonicQuad discussions are all about!

Also, I'm pretty sure he's not going to do any more 3D upconversions, since T2 3D didn't do well at all upon release, and that is his second biggest film ripe for conversion. He said "Aliens" would be next 3D conversion ("because people seem to like it") if T2 was well-received. The problem is that when he does a 3D conversion, the film gets DNRed to death as part of the preparations. It's understandable, as film grain doesn't work well in 3D. Did you see the UHD of T2? It's pretty nasty looking.

Yes thank you. The HD is quite a bit sharper than the DVD so they did something more than up res a previous transfer. I do think the audio gained even more with crisp discrete surround sound. The story remains the same, could not be improved on!

There is a clue to the secret I finally caught after seeing this again. When the TV show producer is talking to Mima's manager he says to her:" don't you wish you had a chance like this with your career?"

EDIT: I just ordered the soundtrack!

Thom Yorke & Flea, Wynton Marsalis, and Daniel Pemberton are some of the musical heavyweights whose music is featured on the soundtrack to “Motherless Brooklyn” - the film directed, written by, produced by and starring Edward Norton. Featured on the album are two versions of the song “Daily Battles , each performed by musical icons of modern music. Thom Yorke ( who wrote the song) along with Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Atoms For Peace) performs a sparse and emotionally stunning version. The other version of “Daily Battles” was arranged and performed by jazz trumpet icon Wynton Marsalis, who, along with his hand-picked quintet of heavy-hitter-jazz-stalwarts delivers an instant jazz standard version of the song that conjures images of the 1950’s-era gin-soaked Harlem jazz club seen in the film. Additionally the album showcases new recordings of several jazz classics along with and songs created by in-demand composer Daniel Pemberton – all in that same smoky-jazz-club vibe - recorded by Marsalis and his ensemble specifically for the film.

Did Anyone Snag my Jaws 4K deal link today? - hope so  It is over now

Unfortunately, I paid over double for that special edition of JAWS. Superb Native UHD4K. As I've always maintained, SNOOD is that rare early bird who always manages to catch the worm. :SB

See the source image

Indubitably, SNOOD much rather have a frothy Banana Daiquiri!:LB
