The SL-G700 was previewed last year as a prototype. Now it's official....Technics joins SACD camp.

Energize music from multiple sources with the Grand Class Network / Super Audio CD Player: SL-G700

  • Direct DSD to analog decoding
  • MQA decoding
  • also a music streamer
I wonder how much this will cost.

It also handles Stereo DSD 64, DSD 128 and DSD 256 music download files.

The SL-G700 Network Streamer + DAC + SACD player is due out in March 2019 for a price of 2,500 to 3,000 Euros ($2,899 - $3,499)

At that price range, I'd suggest moving up to the exaSound e38 DAC.
Then you get Multichannel and Stereo playback of DSD and FLAC files vs. Stereo only with the Technics SL-G700.

Brian, I was going to enquire whether the Technics is a stereo and/or multichannel player. For that kind of $$$$ .... NO multichannel SACD playback is out of the question since the majority of SACDs, most especially classical, are SURROUND!

The focus of the Technics SL-G700 is as a Network Streamer and Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) as part of Technics' Grand Class high-end audio series.
The SACD disc playing capabilities of the product are a secondary add-on feature. In that sense, the pricing fits. (These days, most high-quality Stereo Network Streaming/DACs start at around $5,000).

For people looking for a product like this at under $5,000, I'd recommend looking at the exaSound e38 (as noted above).
Then you get an 8-Channel DAC with a 30-day money back guarantee that plays Stereo and Multichannel DSD and PCM files at bit rates up to DSD 256 (11.2 MHz) for $3,849 - just above the $3,499 price of the Technics.

I recommend avoiding DSD-based equipment entirely, and transcoding any DSD material you own into flac. The equipment required to play PCM-based digitized sound is much, much less expensive than DSD equipment, and sounds every bit as good. You can buy an entire multichannel audio system that will make you very happy for a small fraction of the cost of these "high-quality Stereo Network Streaming/DACs." That includes HTR, speakers, Raspberry Pi (or other silent computer to use as a media player), and a NAS to store your collection. For < $150 you can buy a used Pioneer Elite BDP-80FD to rip your SACDs (you needn't connect it to the HTR; think of it as a computer peripheral). Of course you can rip all of your other digital media using an ordinary computer with a standard Blu-Ray drive.

My experience is the opposite. DSD does indeed sound better here.
But, as they say, your mileage may vary (YMMV) :)
