At the time, to me, it seemed like they single-handedly started the ska revival. Sure there were others around the same time, but their songs were so strong.
Yeah...there were a bunch of great "2-Tone" bands, but of the big 3--The Selecter, The Beat, The Specials--you could argue (no disrespect to The Beat and Ranking Roger, RIP) that The Specials were first among equals.

I'll admit, I've never heard of him, nor the bands he was part of. I went to youtube just in case. Nope, never heard any of those tunes. I sort of like the way they sound though.
GOS - you have probably heard this song that he co-wrote recorded by another band…
If you go back and listen to The Specials, Fun Boy Three, and The Colourfield, you will be rewarded with some pretty powerful music - especially in the context of the times 👍🏼
