The MR-1 was the top of the line Nakamichi for sound. The Dragon had more consumer aimed features.
There are a couple by Teac and Technics that were well regarded too. I forget the model numbers right now. There are some popular preamp upgrade mods for the Technics that people share.

I got as far as getting set up for cassette transfers a while back with a very lucky snipe of a MR-1 on Ebay. Balanced output straight into my Apogee Rosetta 800. A full output from a properly recorded metal bias tape gives a full +4 output. I didn't follow through with open reel decks and an oven for baking tape. I spent my time wrestling digital into submission and I leave the tape transfers to the experts.

Someone did a shootout between a modified Technics vs a Nak MR-1 a while back. The modded Technics had better signal to noise but the Nak still had the high end detail nailed.
