No Quadraphonic mix was ever completed and released, although a 5.1 surround mix was completed and released in 2014 on Blu-Ray

That's funny: I'd always assumed it had been mixed in quad, because of the title!

Well, apparently it was considered for a quad album release .

I don't have the short DVDA box set ,but it was mentioned in the booklet. And it went something like this :

That Pete and Ron Nevison mixed Trax for quad but upon playback using a quad decoder (SQ I believe) ,they found the decode to be very poor for quad separation.
So it was scrapped.


Too bad really as those initial SQ Decoders were indeed very poor for quad recordings.
However ...They could have released it in Q8 and Quad Reel ,but did not .

So that's that. A missed opportunity IMHO.

I have the Blu-ray 5.1 mix of Quadrophenia. It sounds pretty sweet.

The album has so much out of phase left/right panning stuff mixed in, it sounds almost like quad on SQ. Whether it is intentional or not. And good enough for me. For best results, "extended response" cartridge is needed (meaning, high stereo separation and extended frequency response).

a little bass shy but a must have for Who fans. The Rock with Moon's drums filling the room is tremendous on its own. And yes a shout out to my avatar!
