According to Jazz Times, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. They deliberately avoided ranking, although Bitches Brew does appear first (!). The only other surround title on the list: Head Hunters (of course).

Not crazy about how they formatted their ad infused picks.

I need to check out that Holland title.
Always felt Red Clay was kind of boring.
Good to see the Metheny in there.

They assembled a great list.

This genre is what I listened to most in the 70's. Here's my 10 in no particular order:

Mind Transplant - Alphonse Mouzon
Icarus - Paul Winter & Winter Consort (Oregon)
Jack Johnson - Miles
Heavy Weather - Weather Report
Head Hunters - Herbie Hancock Q8, SQ & SACD
Soaring - Don Ellis
Rise - Herb Alpert
Touch - John Klemmer
Age of Steam - Gerry Mulligan DVD-V
Birds🐦 of Fire 🔥 - Mahavishnu Orchestra Q8, SQ & SACD

Two of mine were released in Quad back in the 70's. One more got the treatment in the modern era. Formats listed are the Quad versions I've owned.
