bigbillquad's post in the 'what's your latest Q8/QR' thread about the Japanese auction that included a previously-unknown quad reel of John Lennon's Imagine got me wondering about Toshiba-EMI's quad output - basically because, if something like Imagine could go under the radar for all these years, what else is out there?

I was originally just going to confine this to their quad reels, but then I realised I had a full list of all the titles from the US and UK that they licensed for LP output from some quad research I'd done, so I thought I'd include that as well because it might give some hint as to what else (if anything) was released on quad reel. Then I realised that some of their quad reels were Asian market titles (the usual mixture of instrumental movie themes and easy listening pop hits) so I thought it would be wise to include a full list of the Asian market LPs that they released as well, for the same reason.

Like with the thread I did about the King Records Japan Quad Reels a while back, my hope is that this thread will sort of serve as an 'information trap', and that when it's indexed by Google and other search engines, it might eventually draw more people here who have information about any further quad reel releases on Toshiba-EMI, if there are any.

A massive debt of gratitude goes to @Mark Anderson whose Quadraphonic Discography provided the basis for most of this research. The majority of this information can be found in Mark's discography, but putting all the catalog numbers in sequential order I was able to identify several 'unknown' LPs (primarily the Asian-market ones) and then by googling them, I was able to (I believe) find all of them.

Where possible, I've linked the catalog numbers to either a discogs entry that shows the release, or in the absence of that, an auction listing or other website that provides details and/or pictures.

In at least two cases, Pink Floyd AHM and Riz Ortolani RPO, Toshiba got stampers instead of master tapes, thus despite the RM designation on cover these were SQ.
DSOTM was real RM, so since they had the 4-channel tape for the encoding, it's very likely they did a QR too.

I've always thought it was incredibly odd that there were no stock pre-recorded reels of DSOTM, at least none that I've ever seen. Reels weren't exactly mainstream in 1973, but they were certainly around and new titles got released. In fact, other than the semi-recently-unearthed two Japanese titles, there weren't any PF reels at all that I know of.

I came across some of those stereo Floyd reels in putting together this research, but there's precious little info about the series and it's difficult to search for because the majority of everything is in Japanese. So searching for terms like 'oxa reel' or 'eoxa reel' or 'eoxa tape' etc. (hoping to find others in the same series prefix) yields nothing. Given the non-sequential numbers of the extant tapes though leads me to believe that once again, there was probably a big series of tapes, but that they're incredibly rare. The four that I did find were:

OXA-5067 - Pink Floyd 'Atom Heart Mother'
OXA-5084 - Pink Floyd 'Meddle'
EOXA-5093 - Pink Floyd 'Obscured by Clouds'
EOXA-5096 - T-Rex 'The Slider'

I haven't had the time or energy to google many/all of the missing catalog numbers, but I'm sure there must be more tapes in the stereo series.

Steelydave and company have collated an interesting cross section of Japanese/Asian QUAD Open Reel/SQ/QS Vinyl. Winopener's addition of the Floyd Stereo ORs was an added bonus. As previously mentioned, I was an avid Open Reel QUAD/Stereo collector at the time these albums were released and also had QS/SQ/CD~4 apparatus to decode all these discs. But as there was NO internet at the time and the American audio rags concentrated their reviews/articles on mainly stateside software with sporadic reviews of Import vinyl [most desirable at the time], the unpopularity of QUAD among these same mags precluded any type of extensive inclusion of Japanese/Asian Open Reels and matrix/CD~4 Vinyl.

Looking over the list bar the desirable Lennon QUAD OR and the PF Stereo Reels and a very 'respectable' assortment of POP/Internat'l QS Vinyl, the Asian market QS LPs are mostly easy listening, akin to stateside Percy Faith, Ray Conniff, Mantavoni, Living Strings,101 String fare. Not of much interest, to me, at least. But I wonder if any of the Motown QUADs were released on QUAD Open Reel in Japan?

A burning question which I know Steelydave can answer: When SONY, etc. supplies Dutton Vocalion with QUAD open reel masters for transfer to SACD, at what speed are they: 15 or 30 ips and are they 1 or 2 inch masters?

Also, what tape deck does Michael Dutton utilize to transfer the masters and what DSD converter is employed?

Doesn't seems that any of the JVC CD4-W series had any tape counterpart, reel or cart; so far none has surfaced. The Motown quads belong to this series.
What did have a QR counterpart is the King 4D-xx cd4 series, some has surfaced in the past, Carpenters and Moody Blues.

Sony is not handing out masters to these companies. They were not doing that when we did DTS in the 90s. It is being delivered a different way

DTS Entertainment was accepting [in some instances] DAT tapes back in the late 90's for transfer to DTS RBCDs is what I heard. But in a recent video supplied by ubertrout regarding classical label Pentatone's QUAD RQR SACDs of 1970's DGG and Philips QUAD material, actual Dolby~encoded Master Reels were supplied to that label which is why I asked.

So, can it be 'assumed' that SONY is supplying DSD mastered [from the original analogue QUAD masters] hard drives to D~V for replication to SACD?

I edited post #1 to add a section for samplers and compilations - I don't think it's complete (at the very least the cheesy easy listening comps with catalog numbers TX4-3010, TX4-3012, and TX4-3013 should exist, and maybe TX4-3015 upward) but it's a start at least, and might draw more stuff out of the woodwork.

I also added a couple of random Japanese market pop releases that were in amongst what seems to be a stereo series - KJ-1605 and KJ-1614.

I have pictures of most of the samplers/comps that don't otherwise have a link attached to their catalog number - if anyone wants/needs any of them let me know, and I can post or send them to you. I figured there was no point in posting them all since they're primarily in Japanese and of little interest.

I have pictures of most of the samplers/comps that don't otherwise have a link attached to their catalog number - if anyone wants/needs any of them let me know, and I can post or send them to you. I figured there was no point in posting them all since they're primarily in Japanese and of little interest.

Intresting that these seems to be quad-encoded RM tapes, so these will play on a stereo deck and then decoded into quad on a qs/rm system. Please, post all the ones you have found, it does add valuable information on the Japanese QR world.

Sorry if I was unclear, the KJ-16xx releases are RM-encoded LP's, not reel-to-reel tapes. All the other LPs I found (so far) in the KJ-16xx series are stereo, but it wouldn't surprise me if there are more single-inventory RM titles buried amongst them.

Speaking of stereo reel-to-reels, during my web-travels over the last couple of weeks I've been keeping track of the stereo reels that were part of this XA series of Toshiba-EMI Japan tapes. My earlier presumption (that the non-sequential numbers of the Floyd tapes meant there were more tapes in this series) was correct. It seems to be the case with a lot of Japanese release series that the prefixes will change to denote either different labels, or stereo/quad designations - like in that Warner-Pioneer list I posted recently, one of the series goes QP-8177W, QP-8178A, P-8179W, P-8180A, and so on. They seem to have no problem mixing quad and stereo prefixes and different label suffixes, etc. I'm sure it made complete sense to them at the time, but it makes searching for this stuff really difficult.

Anyway, I think I found about half the tapes in the Toshiba-EMI XA-5xxx stereo sequence, and I thought I'd leave the list here - I know it's probably of minimal interest here, but there is some great stuff (Beatles, Blue Note, etc.) in this series I couldn't find this info anywhere else on the web so I thought it should go somewhere. I also saved all the box/reel photos I came across (about 120 in total) but I won't post them here, I'll just throw a handful at the end to give people a flavour of what they look like. If anyone wants the remainder of the photos (or wants to host them) feel free to get in touch via private message.
